The souvenir is produced of natural wood, without any chemical treatment or colouring.
The first “drvoružica” (wood-rose) was created by chance 18 years ago and over time attracted a number of fans, reports Poslovni.hr on November 19, 2016.
“Wooden leaves from which I create roses used to be a by-product of the production of wood elements in the workshop of my husband. I was sorry to watch them being thrown in the oven, since they looked wonderful, these thin transparent fragrant leaves made of wood. And so I started using the leaves to make roses”, says Jasna Bokan who produces “drvoružica”.
Reactions of people around her were positive and that gave her the motivation to continue. When she started the whole idea, she signed up for membership in the Croatian Souvenir Association. As a member, and also independently, she has participated in numerous exhibitions. She also submitted a request for intellectual property protection which was soon approved.
“The great advantage of my roses is that they are unique and each rose is different. They are handmade and they cannot be replicated by a machine, so the audience reactions are always positive”, says Bokan. Wooden roses are not treated with any chemicals or colours, and the colour of the product is determined by the natural colour of the wood from which it is made.
The brightest, almost white roses are made of spruce, while roses made of fir are also bright, but with strong tree rings. Roses made of larch are light pink. There are also roses made of walnut wood which come in a combination of light and dark brown. Mahogany produces roses almost burgundy red in colour.
“Given that all the roses are of natural colour, they can be easily combined with each other, but also look nice on their own. In making floral arrangements, we use different combinations of colours and scents of eucalyptus, cinnamon and anise”, says Bokan.
Her roses can be found at various events and fairs in Croatia, like Floraart, Špancirfest, and many others. In addition to Croatia, “drvoružica” has been presented abroad as well, particularly in Austria.
