The Animal Protection Association has stated that the first two blocks should have been opened in April last year, but everything was just done on a promise.
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes on the 22nd of April, 2018, a shelter for abandoned animals in Slavonski Brod, the construction of which started three whole years ago, has not yet been completed. Originally announced as one of the most modern animal shelters in Croatia, Slavonski Brod's shelter, which was to be constructed on a handsome 5,000 square metre plot was supposed to house a main building and five blocks to accommodate dogs, along with a special space exclusively for cats.
As stated and as lokalni.hr writes, the Animal Protection Association has openly stated that the first two blocks should have been opened back in April of last year, but everything was done on a promise. The money, allegedly, is not there.
''When we last visited the shelter, there were not a lot of things needed for the shelter to function, such as mandatory quarantine for dogs, and fencing. Unfortunately, it's been proven that the announcement of the shelter opening was just a pre-election promise, because, as the elections passed, all the on it works stopped. We're not after some sort of hotel for dogs, as some have accused us of being, just a shelter which has to comply with all the stipulated conditions for a shelter,'' said Darija Debeljak of the Veselo dvorište association.
At this time, volunteers are still the only ones actively caring about the unfortunate animals. The association has stated that the city did not give the promised 30,000 kuna for the sterilising of stray dogs and cats for last year either. The city says that as much as 1.8 million kuna has been allocated for the construction of the shelter so far, and that the aforementioned works concern the construction of the first two blocks for the accommodation for dogs, access roads and car parks, the installation of the fence and the necessary connections to the water supply and drainage system.
The response to the issue sent directly from the city states that the modern shelter, still three entire years in the making, will be a "no kill" shelter in accordance with all the current European regulations and standards, with a capacity of 120 dogs, and that the city administration will hold a meeting with the representatives of the Veselo dvorište association on the subject of the payment of the funds for the sterilisation of stray animals next week.
