Pula Finally Getting a Public Swimming Pool

By 8 March 2016

City council approved financing, construction to begin soon

During the Croatian national swimming championship, men's relay team from Pula, upon winning a bronze medal, brought out a banner in support of their plea for an Olympic size pool in Pula. Just two weeks after, on March 7, 2016, city council, lead by the mayor Boris Miletić announced that they have accepted the project for the very first public swimming pool in Pula and that the construction will commence soon.

With 14 yes votes and 5 abstainers, Pula city councilmen officially accepted the decision to build the future swimming pool in the city area of Veruda. Public company Pula Sport d.o.o. now has the permission to take out a 45 million kuna loan to complete the project:

"Future public swimming pool will be available to everyone, from preschoolers and school children, people with disability, to recreational swimmers, pensioners, professional swimmers and sports clubs. This is a large project and we are ready to take on this financial responsibility in order to construct the most important sports object in our city" Pula mayor Boris Miletić said during the assembly. He also added that all aspects of this project were carefully researched and realistic construction scope was taken into consideration in order to ensure this new project is not a burden for the city budget and residents of Pula "We have to continue to act responsibly with public money and I believe this is the best and most reasonable project that will satisfy all our public needs" Miletić concluded.

With two swimming clubs in the city and several more in the wider area, completion of this project cannot come soon enough considering that until now, they had to use inadequate swimming pools, hotel facilities or pools that were too far away from the city. And considering they managed to win 13 medals at the last national swimming championship, just imagine what they will be able to do once they have a proper swimming pool in their own city.
