Prime Minister Plenković Begins His Visit to Germany

By 11 December 2016

During the two-day visit, Croatian Prime Minister will meet with Chancellor Angela Merkel and other government representatives.

Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković arrived on Sunday evening in his inaugural visit to Germany where he will meet on Monday with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and President of the Bundestag Norbert Lammert, reports Novi List on December 11, 2016.

“I expect to have a very good meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. We will discuss the strengthening of bilateral relations and economic ties between the two countries, as well as the preparations for the European Council meeting next week, where we expect to discuss numerous issues, from the refugees crisis and economic issues to relations with Russia”, said Prime Minister Plenković after arriving in Berlin on Sunday evening.

Plenković noted that Germany is the largest economic partner of Croatia and particularly emphasized the fact that about two million German tourists visit Croatia every year.

“Of course, we will talk about the upcoming election year in Germany, which will also elect a parliament and president. I want to strengthen the partnership between Germany and Croatia and between the two governments, of course in the context of good relations we have between HDZ and CDU”, said Prime Minister and HDZ president Plenković.

During the evening he met at the premises of the Croatian Embassy in Berlin with representatives of the large Croatian community living in the German capital.

“I want to hear directly from members of our diaspora which topics are currently in the focus of their attention and how can Croatian diplomatic missions in Germany help them with their problems”, concluded the Prime Minister.

It is believed that the fact that Plenković was invited to visit Berlin just a month after becoming Prime Minister demonstrates the traditionally good relations between Croatia and Germany. President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović was also invited to visit Berlin very soon after taking office in February 2015.
