Prime Minister Plenković Condemns Attacks in Berlin and Istanbul

By 20 December 2016

Prime Minister says that Croatia is developing new national security strategy.

The security situation in the country is good, but there is continuing threat of terrorism and it is one of the reasons why this government is going to draft a new strategy of homeland and national security, said on Tuesday Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, the day after the attack on a Christmas market in Berlin and the assassination of Russian Ambassador to Turkey, reports Index.hr on December 20, 2016.

In recent years, we have had a series of attacks within the borders of the European Union, and what we saw last night in Berlin is very similar to what we saw in July in Nice, said the Prime Minister answering reporters’ questions on recent events.

“The task of this government is to make sure that the concept of homeland and national security primarily guarantees the safety of citizens of Croatia”, said the Prime Minister and explained that this was the main reason why the government will develop the new national security strategy, adopt a new law on homeland security, and implement the integration of all Croatian security agencies and institutions. The government will also improve high-quality intelligence cooperation with other member states of the European Union and other global partners.

Terrorism is a continuous threat which is not just happening in other parts of the world, but also in all countries of the European Union, and that is the reason why we are going to pay attention to the issue, said Andrej Plenković.

“The security situation in the country is good, all relevant ministries are engaged in regular consultations and that is the core of our homeland and national security concept, to be able to act preventively and respond to any possible threats”, said Plenković and stressed that police have been carefully monitoring for months what is happening at the Croatian borders.

The Prime Minister expressed his condolences to victims of the attack in Berlin, to the German authorities, as well to the Russian authorities for the assassination of Russian Ambassador in Ankara which also took place on Monday.
