During the UEFA Euro 2016 tournament in France last year, the Eiffel Tower lit up in the colors of the many national teams participating in the tournament. For the World Handball Championship in France this year, another one of the most famous monuments in Paris wears the colors of the countries of the world: the Arc de Triomphe.
The World Handball Championship kicked off on Wednesday with an opening match against France and Brazil, and Croatian fans will cheer on their “Cowboys” tonight when they open the championships against Saudi Arabia at 20:45.
Just a day before the official opening of the handball championship, the Arc de Triomphe was lit up in Croatian colors, reports Dalmacija News on January 13, 2017.
Funnily enough, many of us are not strangers to the sight of national team colors brightly glowing across some of the most famous monuments in Paris. If you recall, last year’s European Championships in football was held in France, and the Eiffel Tower was one of the biggests stars of the show: after every match, the Eiffel Tower would light up in the colors of the teams whose fans were the most active on social networks - and trending.
While it may not be the Eiffel Tower for this year’s World Handball tournament, it is one of the most triumphal arches in the world - and to our delight, a famous monument in Paris proudly wears Croatian colors.
The Arc de Triomphe monument was designed by Jean Chalgrin in 1806, and construction was completed in the early 1830s. The height of the arch is almost 50 meters and the width is nearly 45 meters.
