By 25 January 2017

Lučić-Baroni beat Pliskova 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open

Mirjana Lučić-Baroni’s fairytale run at this year’s Australian Open continued, as the veteran Croatian qualified to her first Grand Slam semifinal in 18 years on Wednesday, January 25, 2017.

The 34-year-old Croatian, who had already beat third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska, caused one more upset of the tournament with a 6-4 3-6 6-4 win vs. fifth-seeded Karolina Pliskova at Rod Laver Arena.

Lučić-Baroni took the first set with a service break in the last game. She broke again for a 2-0 lead in the second when Pliskova took a medical time out for treatment on her right foot. After the treatment, Pliskova rallied to win the second set 6-3.

After an exchange of service breaks in the third set, Pliskova took a 4-3 lead and then the Croatian called for a medical timeout for what appeared to be a leg problem. She won the next nine points and served out.

She will look to reach her first Grand Slam final ever when she meets No.2 seed Serena Williams or ninth seed Johanna Konta next.
