With his Austrian counterpart in the men’s doubles final, Split’s 24-year-old Mate Pavić has won it all at the Australian Open!
Mate Pavić and Oliver Marach won the Australian Open after defeating the Colombian combination Juan-Sebastian Cabal and Roberto Farah 6:4, 6:4 in the men's doubles finals, reports Gol.hr on January 27, 2018.
In both sets, Pavić and Marach broke their opponents in the ninth game. In the first set, after saving four break points on their serve in the fourth game, Pavić and Marach broke them again to take the 5:4 lead. Afterwards, the duo won the set on Pavić's service.
In the second set, there were fewer chances for the break. Pavić and Marach saved two breaks in the second leg and their opponents one in the third. However, the Croatian-Austrian team took the advantage over the Colombian duo for 5:4 again. The Austrian then served without any error, and after an hour and 35 minutes of play, Pavić and Marach celebrated the victory at the Australian Open.
Pavić and Marach continued their winning streak this year, and this victory came to their first Australian Open trophy. Last year they played in the Wimbledon final.
On Sunday, the final day of the Australian Open, at 6:00 Croatian time, Mate Pavić will play with Canadian tennis player Gabriela Dabrowski in the mixed doubles final against the Hungarian-Indian duo Timea Babos and Rohan Bopanna.
After that, at 9:30 Croatian time, Croatia’s best tennis player Marin Čilić will play in the singles final against Roger Federer for his second Grand Slam title.
