August 2, 2022 – Don’t fancy the crowds of Split or Dubrovnik? Finding accommodation on the islands has become a bit complicated? Don’t worry, we’ll sort you out with an underdog, Biograd na Moru.

The national media are beaming with pride reporting record overnight stays, music festivals are back in full force, and the motorways are finally paying off again. Croatian tourism is where we all hoped it would be. In fact, we’re running out of space with the most popular destinations including the famous cities, Istrian villages, and the islands of Dalmatia. It’s time to start looking for alternatives. We tried telling you to go see Lika and Gorski Kotar, Slavonija and Baranja, but we do understand the desire to stay close to the sea. This is why today we will share a little gem that has got it all. Welcome to Biograd na Moru, famous among Croatians and Czechs, but still waiting to be fully discovered.

The little town of some 6000 residents is located only 30 km south of Zadar and about 50 km north of Šibenik, or 130 km from Split. It is nestled between two bays and overlooks the most indented part of the Adriatic coast. Surrounded by national parks and nature parks, it boasts plenty of tourist and recreational facilities but keeps a calm, homely atmosphere even in the height of summer. Get to know this charming little place through our top list of activities in Biograd na Moru. Here are some of our favourites that we suggest you try this summer:

Beach Hop

Whether you are the type to go for an early morning run and swim, like to chill all day or go late night dipping, you will find a spot that suits your needs. With the most famous ones being Bošana, Dražica, and Soline, Biograd offers a variety of terrain and conditions on its beaches. They range from pebbles and rocks, an open swimming pool for training, to a sandy beach perfect for the little ones. There is plenty of space both in the sun and in the shade. For perfect comfort, we suggest renting a lounge and/or an umbrella. As for sustenance and entertainment, you can find pretty much anything there. The little stands include everything from bakeries, fast food and ice cream to fresh fruit and salads. As for the little ones, there are water slides, aqua parks, playgrounds and attractions such as VR.

Chase Sunsets

Thanks to the neighbouring islands being so dense and so close to Biograd, a sunset will look different depending on where you stand. If you plan it just right, you could have it so that you can still see the sun nesting between the islands from one point when it’s not visible from another point just a few hundred metres down. Whether you want to see it reflecting in the sea, disappearing behind Pašman, or glistening through the trees, one thing is always true – every sunset is more beautiful than the previous.

Count the Islands

The big ones, the one with the lighthouse, the heart-shaped island… Ugljan, Pašman, Dugi Otok, Sv. Katarina, and Galešnjak can all be seen from Biograd or places nearby. Hop on a ferry and visit some of them, or try counting and naming them while having your afternoon swim, we promise it’s fun both ways!

Eat and Drink

With pubs and restaurants densely populating the entire stretch of the beach, as well as the city centre, we challenge you to stay hungry or thirsty in Biograd! Start with brunch at the beach, have your afternoon iced coffee in the shade of one of the beach bars, go about your evening enjoying some fresh local seafood followed by Italian-inspired gelato, and of course, round it all up with a cocktail or two right by the sea. If you prefer cooking at home, get up early to catch the local fishermen coming back from their nightly catch and buy some of the best fish directly from them, or visit the local market for more fresh produce. As for edible souvenirs, you can never go wrong with some dried figs and olive oil which are produced in something like every other house. If you notice fruit or olives in backyards, try knocking on their doors and finding out if you can buy some to take home. Chances are, it won’t take more than a few knocks to declare mission success.

Get Some Movement In

After you’ve eaten and fed your entire family, never go swimming! Embrace the healthy Dalmatian ways and chill in the shade for a bit until it all settles down. Only after a little nap under the pines will you be ready to move. The 4 km stretch by the sea should be enough for recreational joggers, and if you get up early you will be rewarded by the sun rising above the pines in the most charming of ways. If you prefer running long distances or cycling, we suggest heading out of Biograd, and following the Adriatic Highway towards Zadar for some truly breathtaking views. With most of it being covered with cycling paths, it is suitable for all kinds of activity. It will take you through a few charming little villages, but its true beauty lies in the fact that for the most part, it passes right by the sea and provides perfect little private swimming spots.

Go on an Adventure

If swimming, running or cycling doesn’t cut it for you, and you need a little bit of adrenaline to spice up your day, try one of the activities at the beach, in the forests, or nearby. Our favourite beach activities include parasailing and jet skiing, followed by renting a SUP and exploring the bays. If you’re looking to entertain the whole family, you can also rent a paddle boat and try sliding down into the open sea. Needless to say, always make sure the weather conditions are right and listen to the advice of experts to stay safe! Discover Vransko Jezero

Tired of the beach, had too much ice cream, or maybe the sea is too salty? Head out to Lake Vrana, a nature park just a short drive from Biograd, which is also the largest lake in Croatia. With an area of 30.2 km², it makes up its own ecosystem, with interesting flora and fauna. It is filled with brackish water and is home to many species of fish and birds. The area of the park also encompasses a few localities dating as far back as the 9^th century. Even if you’re only out for a day of birdwatching and walking, there is plenty to see. If you’re looking for a more active visit, try renting a bicycle or a kayak, or hike to one of the viewpoints to see the Kornati National Park from above.

June 16, 2022 - Dalmaland will combine new water park attractions with the already popular Fun Park Biograd!

Croatia gets a unique place of entertainment that combines themes and water attractions modeled on the world's best entertainment centers. Pools and water slides will join the already known Jurassic World, Space, Pirate Bay, and Wild West at the current Fun Park Biograd. Only a few countries in Europe and the world can compete with this unique entertainment offer, reports Dalmatinski Portal. 

The Dalmaland water park construction and attractions at Fun Park Biograd have been officially announced. 

On Wednesday, June 15, 2022, many figures from the county, municipalities, tourist boards, hotel representatives, sponsors, and Erste Bank attended the ceremonial laying of the foundation. Among others, the president of the Zadar County Chamber of Commerce Denis Ikić, the Zadar County representative Ante Vukašin and the mayor of Biograd na Moru Ivan Knez were in attendance, while the blessing was led by Don Frane Šindija from the Biograd parish.

The designers of the water park and the contractors are Croatian companies. The world-famous Polin Waterparks company will build the water attractions, which has so far constructed slides for more than 50 world water parks. The end of works and the opening of Dalmaland are scheduled for May 2023.

Dalmaland will feature the following:

- wave pool - pool with artificial waves to enjoy and relax after adrenaline slides,

- children's water slides and swimming pool provides carefree entertainment for the youngest, with water cannons, slides, and water fountains,

- water slides with pool - water descents of different heights with many lights and sound effects that the whole family will enjoy in safe conditions across more than two kilometers,

- swimming pool for diving - water oasis of fun for all ages,

- adrenaline fast looping rocket slide that reaches an incredible speed of 12.56 m / s and windigo of 11.07 m / s, the pools will have built-in heat pumps for heating.

The representatives announced that new equipment would be procured for the 2023 season. Namely, the entire Fun Park Biograd will switch to cash-less payment bracelets with an RFID reader.

The entire investment is worth HRK 50,000,000.00; the investment will be made from Erste Bank Investment Loan funds. It will provide an additional 30 jobs so that the number of employees in the Park will be 100, of which 30 are permanent.

Given the high seasonality of tourism and heat in the summer, it was necessary to use the position in the center of the Dalmatian coast, which will undoubtedly increase revenues and local businesses from hotels, restaurants, and private companies and bring Zadar County to the top of tourism lists, both domestic and foreign - and given the Mediterranean climate and the number of sunny days, there is hope to increase the length of the season!

The water park expansion will be a step in the vision of creating a unique Fun Pak Biograd entertainment zone. Along with the Wild West Universe, Pirate Bay, and Jurassic World, the Dalmaland water park will stand alongside the largest water parks and provide entertainment that does not exist in this part of Europe.

24 October 2021 - This year the Biograd Boat Show celebrated it's 23rd show with 21 years of continuous record breaking shows, a unique accomplishment with so many boat shows around the world. Held at Marina Kornati in Biograd na moru, this is Central Europe’s largest in-water boat show and has gained international popularity amongst both exhibitors and visitors alike. Industry events held within the Biograd Boat Show  include the 5th HGK (Croatian Chamber of Commerce) Nautical Days (20th-22nd), the Croatia Charter Expo (21st-22nd) and the Biograd B2B business networking event.

The first day was opened by the Minister of Regional Development and EU Funds, Nataša Tramišak.

Stretched out across four marquee halls and three piers spanning the northern and western wings of Marina Kornati, the Boat Show offered visitors the chance to peruse over 300 registered exhibitors across all aspect srelated to the marine industry, including apparel, solar energy, boat charter agents, food products , chandlery and textiles. A highlight for many visiting the boat show, there were also up to 300 boats on display, with many of them open to the public to look through and inspect. 

Of course, in these COVID times, safety measures were in place such as RAPID testing available at the entrance for 50 kuna per person for anyone who did not have a COVID passport (required to enter the event.) There were also many sanitizer stations laid out all over providing many opportunities for both exhibitors and attendees to ensure that they were abiding by the COVID guidelines.

Some of the new vessels that were introduced to the Croatian market included:

• Seamaster 45 Fortuna - Presented by Angelina Yachting, this is the largest motorboat from the Seamaster range, with a 13.5m flybridge. contemporary design and luxe interior. Available for charter with Angelina Yachting.

• Flammifer FFB 640 F-RPA compact firefighting boat - Made domestically in Croatia, this powerful machine is designed to emit jets of up to 45 meters, useful for its’ purpose of fighting fires in marina’s, on ships and in coastal areas where access is only by sea.

• Bali Catamaran in sizes 4.2 and4.6 - Bali is known for its’ unique catamaran designs maximising on lounging space and open living areas. Their 4.2 and 4.6 models are already popular in the charter industry here in Croatia. 

• Agena Marin solar ferry boat - With it’s clean lines and retro design, this lightweight 8.5m long vessel has a maximum of 12 passengers. Equipped with a solar panel with a capacity of 1800 W that constantly charges the batteries, the boat can sail constantly from 5 to 8 hours, depending on the load.

• Lampuga - Premium, electric, emission-free surfboards.

A Biograd Boat Show favourite returned this year as well. Christian Buchair, also known as “Rocket Man” took to the air with his Flyboard Water Jet Pack. Christian is also associated with Efun Waterways, who were also at the Boat Show showcasing their luxury water toys! Efun maximized on being at the Biograd Boat Show and premiered the Messestand, their new German-made carbon electric surfboard from WaterRebels. 

Every evening of the event was closed with live entertainment from local artists, such as Three Little Birds, Mate Skračić band, The Dreamers and a special performance on Saturday night from Freeway “Unplugged”, a band consisting of local nautical workers!

October the 19th, 2021 - The 23rd Biograd Boat Show is set to begin on Wednesday morning, more precisely at 10:00. The much loved Zadar County spectacle will bring together lovers of all things nautical and once again place Croatia firmly on the nautical map.

As Morski writes, this year's Biograd Boat Show will confirm the status of Biograd na moru as a leading international nautical fair and Croatia as a fantastic nautical tourism destination. The entire exhibition space was sold out with more than 300 exhibitors and participating companies.

The nautical industry has had a successful year in Croatia, and this year's exhibitors have generally improved the quality of their exhibits. Visitora can expect to see hundreds of boats ranging from 2 to 20 metres in length, with numerous international and Croatian premieres present, as well as an impressive range of products offered for direct sale.

The Biograd Boat Show is the best opportunity to see the largest selection of boats in the wider region and to ensure the best delivery terms and prices. September 11, 2021 - The DroneDays 2021 event will turn Biograd na Moru near the popular city of Zadar into an aerial robotics mecca from October 4-5.

Airplanes are fun, but unless yo're a pilot, you can only passively enjoy the stunning aerial view as you travel the beaten path managed by the captain in a cockpit. No control, no say on the height or the direction of the above ground observing experience.

Although providing that exciting sense of freedom of flying on a screen only, drones are much better options for those who want to take control of an aerial space. For those who want to learn more about drones, October 4-5 needs to be marked in the diary for DroneDays 2021, a Croatian conference on all things related to drones.

''DroneDays 2021 is a two-day workshop focused on unmanned aerial vehicles, which will be held on 4th and 5th October 2021 in Biograd na Moru, Croatia. The programme consists of keynote lectures, an exhibition area, and is focused on unmanned aerial vehicle applications and end-user industries. It will serve as a meeting place for experts from the industry and academia, end-users, as well as regulatory bodies from the region,'' reads the official website of the event.

DroneDays 2021 will be held at the Ilirija Resort at Biograd na Moru, and 14 speakers have confirmed their arrival at the event at the time of writing this article, with more invited. The confirmed names include drone experts from across Croatia and abroad, from academics from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER) to foreign universities and even NATO.

DroneDays 2021 promises an exciting two days for drone lovers in a more theoretical approach with conferences hosting presentations from keynote industry leaders to more practical opportunities. These include exhibitions (open for the public) where visitors can have face-to-face meetings with leading industrial companies from across the region, showcasing their latest products and services. In addition, there will be a flying area where you can participate in live demonstrations of the latest technological achievements in aerial robotics, and there is also a B2B event where you can meet new partners who share your love for aerial robotics.

Much like drones, the event isn't free. Would-be participants must register on the website and buy a 10 euro ticket. That ticket includes two-day access to the whole programme as well as accreditation, a registration package, workshop materials, and coffee breaks.

With the discussion of order and freedom at large, the debates concerning the legal frame of operating drones in Croatia may well be the most interesting topics of this year's edition of DroneDays.

January 10, 2021 – After the initial opening in Umag in 2018, on the 200th anniversary of the lighthouse services on the Croatian coast, the exhibition "More than light and salt – 200 years of Croatian lighthouses" will open in Biograd na Moru.

The exhibition opens on January 12, 2021, at the Homeland Museum Biograd na Moru, regarding Saint Anastasia's feast and a city day. It was also organized regarding the 200th anniversary of the lighthouse service on the Croatian coast, which officially began with the commissioning of a dedicated facility in Savudrija in 1818.

Today, the lighthouse in Savudrija is a protected cultural asset. After two centuries, it testifies to the rich Croatian maritime tradition and the challenges of being a lighthouse keeper, a very rare profession.

To mark this significant anniversary, the exhibition was organized in April 2018 in the Umag City Museum, showing objects from the history of the lighthouse service, documentaries, marine lighting technology, and photographs from private collections.

After the initial opening in Umag, in partnership with the Croatian Maritime Museum Split and the Maritime Waterways Institution Plovput d.o.o., the exhibition was organized in numerous museums along the Adriatic coast – Rijeka, Zadar, Dubrovnik, Split. The last exhibition was held in February 2020 at the Technical Museum Nikola Tesla in Zagreb.

Visitors have the opportunity to see Croatian lighthouses from the period of the countries that once ruled the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea. For example, the Austro-Hungarian postcards from the collection of the prominent collector, the late Luka Dragičević, and photographs from the extraordinary little-known album of the Croatian Hydrographic Institute.

The exhibition touches on questions about how lighthouses' construction changed the locations where they were built and how the lighthouses themselves changed through wars, modernization of technology, and man's abandonment due to automation.

In addition to exhibits that testify to the long list of duties of today's extremely rare profession of lighthouse keepers, a documentary material is presented that provides valuable information about lighthouse keepers' activities throughout the last century: living and working in almost unimaginable conditions.

The significance of this vocation in the 21st century is thematized on the example of today's Savudrija lighthouse keeper Mario Milin Ungar, who is the fifth generation of lighthouse keepers in his family.

The exhibition dedicated to Croatian lighthouses will be open until February 28, 2021, and the opening event will be held in compliance with prescribed epidemiological measures.

June 9, 2020 — Two skeletons found beneath Biograd na Moru’s old school are reviving local tales of unsolved century-old murders.

Workers building the BioSfera Center for Sustainable Active Tourism in Biograd discovered the remains on the south side of the school’s basement, between a stone outcrop and the external walls.

The structure’s 115-year history left many Biograd residents speculating how the bodies ended up in the soil, reviving local lore of secret century-old murders.

The city called conservationists and archeologists to take over the exhumation and study of the remains and to also confirm their age.

Archeologist and historian Marko Meštrov told Zadarski List the bones date back to the 16th or 17th centuries.

Employees of the Ministry of Culture’s Conservation Department in Zadar continuously work with representatives of the City of Biograd in order to avoid potential risks that accompany large infrastructural work in historical zones. They mostly focus on protecting the underground archeological heritage of the city, which needs to be preserved as much as possible.

The restoration and repurposing of historic buildings in well-worn areas present a constant danger of unearthing some forgotten history. Many recently-erected buildings along the Dalmatian coasts were delayed significantly by similar discoveries, which inevitably freeze all work until researchers and archeologists fully excavate, catalog and move any artifacts or remains.

The two bodies found in the old school may just be the beginning.

“Locals were buried in the old town of Biograd,” Meštrov said, suggesting there may be more skeletons under the school.

Work on the HRK11.3 million BioSfera in Biograd project stuttered from the outset after it began in early 2020. First, the coronavirus pandemic hit shortly after work began, creating a minor speed bump.

The work was stopped again with the discovery of the remains.

The project should be completed by Easter of 2021, according to Danijel Katičin, the director of the Vrana Lake Nature Park which is overseeing the project. Other partners include the City of Biograd, the Cluster for eco-social innovation and development CEDRA Split and Croatian Mountain Rescue Service. It’s mostly financed by the European Regional Development Fund.

The BioSfera project will promote active, cultural or gastro tourism offerings within the area while raising awareness of protected. It ultimately hopes to make Biograd na Moru an active tourism destination.

The old school building is a piece of the Biograd na Moru's architectural heritage, protected in the Register of Individual Cultural Heritage as immovable cultural property. The old, 114-year-old building with an attic is laid along the main road leading to the Biograd waterfront. The building has a basement, ground floor, first floor and attic.

Due to the need to improve education, the building began to be built in 1905 thanks. It was completed in 1906, and school classes began immediately.

The newly opened mixed elementary school had three classes. The school at that time had parquets and a ventilation system, which made it one of the most modern schools in Dalmatia.

September 21, 2019 - Could Biograd na Moru be Croatia's next big health tourism destination?

HRTurizam writes that the last session of the Biograd City Council discussed the strategy of developing medical tourism in Biograd na Moru.

The Strategy of Development of Biograd na Moru has defined tourism as one of the main drivers of economic development, especially health tourism, where Biograd na Moru sees a great opportunity. The backbone of all is the Biograd Special Orthopedic Hospital in the heart of the Adriatic, with an ideal climate according to the Koppen classification.

As Biograd na Moru points out, the proposal for a Decision on adopting the Strategy for the Development of Medical Tourism in Biograd na Moru was presented by a Ph.D Branko Vitale, MD. 

“Biograd has an ideal climate for climate therapy and medical-rehabilitation tourism, which includes a gerontology and geriatric center. The project is being prepared for an international competition in Norway, and we have a lot of support from the Ministry of Health and the Association of Croatian American Professionals (ACAP), an association of American professionals from Croatia,” said Vitale, who launched the Biograd Initiative for the Medical-Tourism Center project.

Namely, the US mega clinic Cleveland Clinic, which is led by Croatian Tomislav Mihaljevic and employs over 60,000 people, has 7.5 million patients and annual revenues of about $10 billion. The annual ACAP conference will be held on September 21, which will present the Biograd project of medical-rehabilitation tourism within a 15-minute presentation. 

“Biograd na Moru, with its health and tourism facilities, has all the preconditions to develop into the leading gerontology and geriatric center of the European Union, by providing a fully-rounded medical-rehabilitation, tourism, and cultural center. All these activities additionally ensure the use of all quality accommodation facilities and thus year-round employment, not only in Biograd, but also in the wider region,” says Vitale, pointing out the construction of a large retirement village not far from the Adria Hotel.

Vitale adds that the center will be operated according to the Scandinavian model. Moreover, the Orthopedic Hospital is the backbone of the development of Biograd, and in four years, it must be at the EU level, or it will not be, according to Vitale.

The climate therapy and medical-rehabilitation tourism project, which also includes the gerontology and geriatric center in Biograd, is supported by the Association of Croatian American Professionals (ACAP), an association of American professionals from Croatia, whose members represent all sides of the international professional community, such as scientists, doctors, engineers, lawyers, artists, journalists, business executives, accountants, and more.

The newly reconstructed system of the hospital as an integral part of the cluster envisages the Center for Geriatric Orthopedics, the first Croatian Center for Gerontology and Geriatrics, the Rehabilitation Center, the Specialist Counselling Center and the Education Center.

"We have potential investors, primarily Norwegians. We have already been to Norway, and they will come to Biograd twice by the end of the year, so that we can receive lessons for applying for an international competition to the Government of Norway and the University Hospital in Oslo for the construction of a gerontology and geriatric center in Biograd. The Germans are interested in Red Harbor for their health needs, mainly respiratory diseases and asthma. Here, as in the Adria Hotel, there is excellent accommodation for the patients of the gerontology and geriatric center. A retirement village will be built near the Adria Hotel, which will accommodate over 500 people, and a tourist complex with thousands of beds will be built on the island of Pasman. These are all potential users of the Gerontology and Geriatric Center, and flight connections with Norway, America, and other countries will be established,” says Vitale, adding that it is necessary to form a Dalmatia cluster to enter the world market in cooperation with Kvarner.

The mentioned medical content is aimed primarily at the treatment of diseases of the third age, which requires a lot of professionals, emphasizes Vitale, and concludes: “The project of the medical-tourist orthopedic-rehabilitation center in Biograd is bound to succeed. We have Norwegians and Americans, and the City of Biograd. We also have good personal relationships with people who want to help Biograd and Croatia. All heads should go under one cap. We in Biograd, Zadar County and the Republic of Croatia must be unique in this project of the century. If there is a setback, the project can slow down but not stop.”

Finally, it should be noted that the Decision on submitting a letter of intent to exercise the founding rights and obligations of the Special Orthopedic Hospital was made at the City Council of Biograd na Moru.

As Novac writes on the 10th of August, 2019, the Croatian park ''Fun Park Biograd'', located near Biograd na Moru close to the popular city of Zadar in Dalmatia, was modelled after some of the world's famous adrenaline entertainment centres.

So far, this Croatian park has seen investments amounting to around 115 million kuna, and the park has now announced a new, huge investment worth an additional 45 million kuna. This staggering amount, according to the local Zadar newspaper Zadarski list, has been allocated for the construction of a water park, or an aquapark, which will extend to and cover 10,000 square metres.

''As we've got some free space on the south side of the car park, we're constructing a big, new attraction. The largest theme-amusement park in Croatia with its new water park and the existing Fun Park Biograd will be called Dalmaland. It will be an ideal symbiosis of attractions both in water as well as on dry land,'' stated the ambitious Stipe Tabak, the general manager of Fun Park Biograd.

The works, as Tabak said, are expected to last until mid-spring 2021 and the water attraction will open in time for the summer of that year. The main investor is, just as it was before, Mirnovec Pyrotechnics, from the continental Croatian town of Samobor, just a short distance from Zagreb.

Such amusement parks, as he says, have to be constantly updated with new facilities, which means that there is a need to constantly keep investing in them. The goal is to cover the costs of the loan raised for its landscaping over the next ten years, as was explained by Franjo Koletić, director of the Mirnovec Group, in his interview with the popular Globus.

Biograd Fun Park currently employs ninety full-time staff, students and seasonal workers, and last year they recorded about 80,000 visitors, seventy percent of whom were foreigners.
