Flights to Croatia: Flydubai Returns to Dubrovnik in 2021

December 18, 2020 - The latest news for flights to Croatia as Flydubai returns to Dubrovnik in May 2021.

Croatian Aviation reports that as we already know, Emirates will no longer operate to Zagreb. The airline's partner low-cost airline, Flydubai, was supposed to travel to Zagreb this winter, but that will not happen, either.

However, Flydubai will resume traffic between Dubai and Zagreb at the start of the summer flight schedule, from March 31, 2021. The airline will thus replace the famous Emirates, which has temporarily canceled the line to Zagreb and will not operate on it in 2021, due to the impact of the pandemic.

Flydubai will operate its first flight to Zagreb on March 31, 2021, and will run four times a week on this route through April and May, every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Four flights a week in the spring, daily to Zagreb in the summer of 2021.

From the beginning of June, Flydubai will operate daily between Dubai and Zagreb until September 5 next year.

The number of weekly flights from September 6 will be reduced to four (Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays) by the end of October. This is the framework plan of this well-known airline. Still, it was also to be expected that FlyDubai would return to Zagreb and replace Emirates, which estimates that there will not be enough demand for their wide-body aircraft in Zagreb next year.

Flydubai will operate on the Zagreb - Dubai route with narrow-body aircraft type B737-800, and in the summer flight schedule, it plans to perform as many as 164 return flights!

Over 57,000 seats available between Dubai and Zagreb in the summer of 2021.

This low-cost company will offer more than 57,000 seats between Dubai and Zagreb in the summer flight schedule, which is significantly less than in 2019 when Emirates operated on this route with a B777-300ER wide-body aircraft with an average capacity of 358 seats per flight (in 2019, more than 152 thousand seats were available on this line, so the number of seats offered on this line will be lower by over 60% compared to 2019.)

Apart from the smaller capacity, the Dubai - Zagreb line will no longer have a first-class seat offer for which Emirates is world-famous. The number of offered seats in business and economy class will be drastically reduced. Nevertheless, the return of Flydubai to Zagreb will enable Emirates passengers to continue their journey to Zagreb with a partner company, which is very important for the market's recovery next year.

Flydubai also plans to return to its second destination in Croatia - Dubrovnik. The Dubai - Dubrovnik line should operate from May 13, twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays. From June 25, the airline plans to add a third weekly flight (Fridays), and scheduled flights are announced until the end of September next year.

Neither Flydubai nor Emirates flew to Croatian airports this year due to the impact of the global pandemic. Still, given that the market is expected to recover next year, Dubrovnik and Zagreb have returned to this airline's network of destinations.

Flights to Croatia: Turkish Airlines Announces More Flights to Zagreb in January

December 17, 2020 - The latest news for flights to Croatia as Turkish Airlines announces more flights to Zagreb in January.

Croatian Aviation reports that Turkish national airline Turkish Airlines has announced its flight schedule for January 2021. Zagreb will be better connected with Turkey's largest city in the first half of January.

Turkish Airlines will offer significantly more flights to Zagreb compared to December this year. From January 1, the number of flights will increase briefly, until January 18, 2020.

From Friday, January 1, to Sunday, January 3, the Turkish national airline will operate four return flights to Zagreb, with two flights announced for Sunday, in the morning and the evening.

From Monday, January 4, to Sunday, January 10, the airline will have seven return flights to Zagreb, with two daily flights available on Monday and Sunday and one on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Depending on the day, flights operate in the morning or evening.

From Monday, January 11, to Sunday, January 17, Turkish Airlines will operate five return flights, one on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday.

From January 18 to 31, the number of flights will return to current levels, and Turkish Airlines will operate between Istanbul and Zagreb four times a week, every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday.

However, thanks to the increase in the number of operations from January 1 to 17, Turkish Airlines will have more than 8,100 seats on sale between Zagreb and Istanbul in January next year, which increases capacity compared to December by almost 30%.

Given the excellent occupancy of aircraft on this route, the move by Turkish Airlines is no surprise. Aircraft type B737-800 has been announced for morning flights, while aircraft of higher capacity - A321 - will operate on the afternoon or evening rotation.

It should also be emphasized that the Airbus A321 has a capacity of 51.70 cubic meters of cargo space, which is important for all freight forwarders operating at Zagreb Airport and transporting cargo to and from Asian countries with Turkish Airlines. The cargo space of the B737-800 aircraft is slightly smaller and amounts to 44.1 cubic meters.

Turkish Airlines is also announcing four flights a week between Zagreb and Istanbul in February. Still, the flight schedule is subject to change and will depend on the epidemiological situation that directly affects demand itself.

Hvar Dining in COVID Times: Restaurants Offering Takeaways in December 2020

December 15, 2020 - Restaurants may be closed in Croatia, but takeaways are allowed, but who is working? A guide to Hvar dining in COVID times in December, 2020.

One of the things that used to drive me nuts when I lived on Hvar was trying to find out which restaurants were open in the winter.

There was no centralised place of information, and nobody ever seemed to know the complete list.

In these more challenging times, of course, all restaurants in Croatia are currently closed. But the takeway option is available. The thing is, if it was almost impossible to get a list of restaurants open in a normal winter, what hope of finding a list of Hvar dining options in this craziest of years?

Help is at hand...

A very nice initiative from Hvar resident and erstwhile TCN correspondent, Zdravko Podolski, on the Expats on Hvar Facebook page, asking the community to contribute their knowledge of restaurants who are open for take outs.

There was a good response. Over to Zdravko...

Travel to Croatia in December 2020: TCTI Viber Community Traveller Experiences

Updated on December 21, 2020 - With travel rules changing, nothing beats real-life experiences for the latest info - feedback from the Total Croatia Travel Info TCTI Viber community.

One of the biggest challenges in this most challenging of years has been to source accurate and reliable current travel information.

With the pandemic wreaking havoc on travel plans, restrictions and new rules have come into force all over the world. These rules are often interpreted in different ways by different officials, and what one reads on official websites is not necessarily the reality on the ground.

As I wrote recently, the fact that Croatia is currently officially closed for tourism to non EU/EEA/UK nationals is not the same as saying that nationals from these countries are not arriving.

In such uncertain times, one of the best sources of information are the real-time travel experiences of recent travellers. TCN and partners started the Total Croatia Travel INfO TCTI Viber community in May, with the aim of helping tourists with the latest travel information. It quickly became clear that the community would also be helping us. The feedback we received from community members as they crossed the borders into Croatia was invaluable in building up a true picture of the current realities on the ground.

After going a little quiet in the autumn, the TCTI Viber community has come to life again after the new border rules of November 30. And once again, people are posting their recent experiences, which at times are ingenious and very different from the official advice. In an article which will be constantly updated as more post their experiences, here are some of the recent ones since December 1, posted anonymously but in full. If you would like to join the TCTI Viber community, you can do so here (you will need to download the Viber app).

December 21 - I successfully entered Croatia today at 6 pm. LAX>AMS>ZAG.

Documents I printed but not necessarily used :

-Negative Covid Test less than 48 hrs
-Enter Croatia Form
-Public Health Passenger Locator Form
-Business Invitation Letter from my hotel in Croatian and translated in English
-Itinerary showing return trip in Jan
-Hotel bookings showing amount paid
-Bank statements showings I have sufficient funds to cover my stay
-IATA guidelines specific to Croatia
-Email from Border Police

In total, around 45 pages. I brought two copies.

Here is what I actually used.

LAX: Neg Covid Test, Enter Croatia Form, Business Invitation Letter
AMS: Nothing
ZAG: Neg Covid Test which they kept a copy. They did not look or take anything else.

The key is to be prepared. Have your paperwork in order with the negative covid test at the top of the stack because they will keep it. Obviously say the purpose of your trip is business or economic. DO NOT SAY TOURISM, unless you like stressful situations. They stamped my passport and that was it. Total time was less than 2 mins.

At both LAX and ZAG I put my passport w/boarding ticket on top of the first page of documents which should be your negative covid test. Be prepared and there's a low likelihood they will flip through the rest.

I really want to thank all the contributors to this group. I wouldn't have made it w/o your bravery and openness. Cheer and let's end the year on a high note.

December 17 - on transfers:

I travelled to Hungary through Croatia last week, my situation was similar to yours. I landed at Zagreb and was immediately leaving Croatia. I did not have a test. At the passport control I was asked if I had one, but once I said I was transiting they immediately let me through, so you should be fine!!

December 15 - Good news!

I am a U.S. citizen and I just entered Croatia! I flew from the west coast of the United States and had a layover in Amsterdam (KLM). No trouble boarding in us or Netherlands. In Croatia just show negative COVID test. I entered for tourism.

December 15 - I messaged MUP this morning around 8 am Croatian time and they responded in about 20 minutes.

I wrote them that my fiancee, an American national will enter Croatia on December 21st via flight Chicago-Washington-Amsterdam-Zagreb and that she will have her US-issued passport, a printed document which confirms our reserved and paid for hotel accommodation, printed out Enter Croatia document, and proof of a negative PCR test which will not be older than 48 hours. I didn't write what the purpose of the trip was.

They responded that, with all those documents, my fiancee will be granted entry into Croatia.

December 11 - Update on American traveling from the US: I’ve passed the first hurdle: getting on the plane. Before you go to the airport, be sure to review the IATA guidelines (google: IATA map covid - this is what the airlines will review when you get to the airport). Right now, it says that passengers are not allowed into Croatia until the 15th, with some exceptions. This may change by the 15th, or it may be renewed ?‍♂️. In any case, be sure that you fall into one of those exceptions - traveling for business, urgent personal matters, or transiting by land to a third country, etc. you’ll need to show them something at check-in to document this. I will give you guys an update when I reach the border. I took a covid test yesterday morning, hoping the results will arrive by the time I get there!

Greetings from Croatia! I have successfully crossed the border. This is how I did it: the IATA guidelines say that no passengers are allowed in Croatia until December 15th, with a few exceptions. One of those is passengers transiting to a third country via a land border. So, I booked a car to be picked up in Zagreb and returned to Belgrade. I also booked a hotel in Belgrade. When I got to the airport, I told the people at the check in counter that I was planning to enter Croatia and then proceed to Serbia by car. I showed them the car and hotel reservations and that was enough. Everything else went very smoothly. At Zagreb airport, the immigration officer asked only for my covid test. I gave it to her, she stamped my passport, and that was it! No other questions, no other documents were asked for. Now, I didn’t lie to airlines. I’m here for a 10 days vacation, but if the Croatian border police didn’t buy the “economic interest” argument, I was fully prepared to rent that car, drive to Serbia, and then spend the next 10 days exploring that country, Albania, and Macedonia. Luckily , they didn’t even ask about that at all. They were only interested in the Covid test.

December 11 - Hello again, just passed Zagreb inmigration and all I showed was out PCR test results and the entry into Croatia. The officer only asked if he could make copies of our results and he kept the entry document. The process took no more than 60 seconds. Best of luck to all of you! Don’t forget to print your documents! So many people were stuck because they only kept copies in their phones!!

December 10 - I just went through the Slovenian - Croatia border (driving) along with my 15 year old son. I had a travel order from my company and it went smoothly! They didn't required the Covid19 test.

December 7 - We made it into Croatia from the US today (US citizens). The biggest hurdle was getting onto the plane in the US. Everything else was easy. We had a letter from a Croatian lawyer as a guarantee we were going for urgent business. We would not have made it on the plane without this letter.

December 5 - And I’m IN! My flight landed briefly in Split, (where I am still for a few minutes) before continuing on to Zagreb. In Split, we had to leave the plane and there was a separate customs line for anyone continuing onward—we had to clear border control and then get back on the plane. I don’t speak much Croatian so I didn’t know what was being said between the MUP officers, but there were 2 extra officers in the booth and they were all talking up a storm and pointing at the computer screens and asking each other questions and showing each other our PCR tests. I kind of think they may have been having some trouble with the computer and entering the info—but who knows. My agent took my passport and immediately asked for my COVID test. I also placed the enter Croatia form in front of her, and held my additional docs in clear view, but the only thing she had any interest in was the test. She kept the copy. I even asked her if she wanted the enter Croatia form after she stamped my passport and she said no.

OK, I had printed:
• Enter Croatia form confirmation (the 1-page PDF you receive once you successfully submit the form)
• Printed negative COVID PCR test result from Italian lab (translated to English), swab taken 34 hrs before my arrival in Croatia
• letter from Zagreb dentist stating that I have an urgent appointment (and the date of the appt)
• invoice showing my acoomodation for duration of stay
• print out of the complete rules for entry, found here: https://mup.gov.hr/uzg-covid/english/286212
• print out of my flight to Croatia and my onward flight

That’s it—and again, the only things the Croatian border police wanted to see were my passport and my test result.

Flights to Croatia: Air France Reduces Paris-Zagreb in December

December 11, 2020 - The latest news for flights to Croatia as Air France reduces Paris-Zagreb in December.

Croatian Aviation reports that French national carrier Air France has reduced the number of weekly flights between Paris and Zagreb this month.

Although Air France originally planned to operate more frequently to Zagreb in December this year, this is not the case. The airline currently operates only two flights a week on this route, which is not surprising given that the airline from the same group, Dutch KLM, with which Air France works closely, currently operates daily to Zagreb.

By the end of December, Air France will operate only 7 return flights on the Paris - Zagreb - Paris route. The airline currently operates on this route twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, with E190 aircraft that have a capacity of 100 passengers in the fleet of this carrier.

The airline decided to add just one flight around the Christmas holidays, on Monday, December 21. Given the capacity of the aircraft used by Air France on this route, 1,400 seats between Paris and Zagreb are available until the end of December.

Direct flights are available on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Recall that Croatia Airlines operates on the same route, on Thursdays and Sundays, and an additional flight is on sale on Tuesday, December 22. If we add the capacity of the national airline until the end of the month, a total of two mentioned carriers on this route will offer slightly less than 2500 seats (2464), which, given the epidemiological situation, should be more than enough even during Christmas and New Year holidays.

Air France is currently offering two daily flights to Zagreb in the summer flight schedule in 2021, but it will be seen whether these flights will be realized.

Flights to Croatia: Second Daily KLM Flight to Zagreb Offers Wide Variety of Connections

December 10, 2020 - The latest news for flights to Croatia as the second daily KLM flight to Zagreb offers a wide variety of connections to destinations in Europe and the United States.

As we already announced, KLM will introduce a second daily flight on the Amsterdam - Zagreb - Amsterdam route from February next year. Thus, Croatian Aviation researched the flight schedule, capacity, and connectivity options to other destinations in Europe and the world.

In mid-February, more precisely, from Monday, February 14, 2021, KLM will introduce its second daily flight between Amsterdam and Zagreb. Thus, KLM will land at Zagreb Airport twice a day from that date. The airline will have an evening departure from Amsterdam (departure at 20:55, arrival in Zagreb at 22:55). The four-member KLM crew will spend the night in Zagreb from February and perform the morning flight from Zagreb (departure at 06:30, arrival in Amsterdam at 08:40).

The second daily flight will depart from Amsterdam at 09:40, and arrival in Zagreb is planned at 11:30. After 50 minutes in Zagreb, the plane will take off for the capital of the Netherlands, with the expected arrival in Amsterdam at 14:30.

This summer, the airline gradually increased the number of flights to Zagreb and currently operates daily, with E190 aircraft with a capacity of 100 passengers. Since September, larger aircraft of the B737-700 and B737-800 types have frequently operated on this route.

KLM will offer almost 80% more seats per day to and from Zagreb Airport

With the introduction of the second daily flight on the Amsterdam - Zagreb - Amsterdam route, smaller aircraft (E175) with a maximum capacity of 88 passengers will operate. Still, KLM will increase the number of seats to and from Zagreb from the existing 200 to 352.

The mentioned two daily flights are currently on sale until Saturday, March 27, 2021. Namely, the airline opened sales on the second daily flight only in the winter flight schedule ending on that date. Still, KLM confirmed that it plans to operate between Zagreb and Amsterdam twice a day and in the summer flight schedule next year, so it is expected that booking will be possible soon on the above flights until October.

Add to this the daily flights of Croatia Airlines, which normally operates on this route with A319 aircraft (currently due to the pandemic's impact with the smaller DashQ400), the number of seats offered since February will increase significantly compared to this year.

The second daily flight's main advantage will be the greater possibility of connections via Amsterdam to numerous destinations in Europe and the world.

Given that many Croatian citizens living and working in Ireland and the United Kingdom use the existing one-day KLM flight to Zagreb, the introduction of the second will increase the choice of connections and reduce waiting times in Amsterdam. For example, London City Airport to Zagreb with KLM via Amsterdam can be reached in just 4 hours of travel (not including check-in time at the airport). There are also excellent connections from Dublin via Amsterdam to Zagreb, twice a day.

From Zagreb via Amsterdam to Dublin in just 3 hours and 50 minutes!

The time spent waiting in Amsterdam for many destinations does not exceed two hours (often only 45 minutes), such as to and from Manchester, Dublin, Stockholm, Oslo, and many other destinations.

KLM will also offer excellent connections to the USA, primarily to New York, Atlanta, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, both on their own and on American Delta flights.

Apart from those traveling directly between Amsterdam and Zagreb, transfer passengers will have a wider choice of destinations with significantly better connections. If we add that KLM often has favorable airfares and excellent service on its flights, these flights should have no issue reaching capacity. In fact, even at this time of year and during a pandemic, KLM has a solid occupancy on the line to Zagreb.

Flights to Croatia: Finnair Plans Flights from Helsinki to Croatia in 2021

December 9, 2020 - The latest news for flights to Croatia as Finnair plans flights from Helsinki to Croatia in 2021.

Croatian Aviation reports that the Finnish national airline Finnair has confirmed its return to Croatia with two routes from Helsinki in the 2021 summer flight schedule.

Finnair did not operate to Croatian airports in the summer flight schedule in 2020. At one point, the airline announced flights to Dubrovnik, but they were not realized due to the epidemiological situation and restrictions at the state borders.

The Croatian market is very important to this airline, and apart from the P2P demand itself, the airline brings a large number of transfer passengers to Croatian airports from numerous Asian destinations, primarily China, Japan and South Korea.

Given that Emirates and Korean Air will not return to Zagreb Airport next summer, Finnair expects a larger number of transfer passengers to popular Croatian destinations such as Split and Dubrovnik, to which the company intends to operate next summer.

"We are sure to return to the Croatian market in the summer of 2021. Lines from Helsinki to Split and Dubrovnik will once again be an important link between Asia and the Adriatic."

The Helsinki-Split-Helsinki route, according to Finnair's current plan, should start with regular direct operations from 11 May 2021 with 5 flights a week (every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday). A319 aircraft with a capacity of 144 passengers in the carrier's fleet have been announced on the routes. Finnair plans to operate on this line until the fall (early October) next year.

The Helsinki-Dubrovnik-Helsinki route is planned for March 29, but the airline will still adjust the flight schedule to Dubrovnik according to the epidemiological situation.

According to the current flight schedule confirmed by this airline, there will be an increase in the number of weekly operations in April and May, so that as of May 25, as many as 6 flights per week will be available on this route (every day except Thursday). In relation to the line to Split, the airline plans to use A321 aircraft with a capacity of 209 passengers towards Dubrovnik. Finnair has as many as 19 aircraft of this type in its fleet.

The very fact that Finnair has decided to keep two lines to Croatia in its destination network for 2021 is important and positive news. It is still questionable whether Croatia Airlines will reintroduce a direct line between Helsinki and Zagreb next summer.

Flights to Croatia: Flydubai Replaces Emirates in Zagreb Next Year

December 8, 2020 - The latest news for flights to Croatia as Flydubai replaces Emirates in Zagreb next year.

Ex Yu Aviation reports that Flydubai will replace Emirates on the Dubai-Zagreb route next summer!

Recall, Emirates officially canceled the Dubai-Zagreb route for all of 2021 back in October. The airline had planned to operate on the Dubai-Zagreb route in this year's summer flight schedule, but due to the global coronavirus pandemic, the start of operations on this route was first postponed, and then completely canceled for this year.

Emirates then left daily flights on this route on sale for the 2021 summer flight schedule, but ultimately canceled the route entirely. Namely, the airline canceled all flights to Zagreb for the next year, closed its office at Zagreb Airport, and fired its local employees. Emirates also canceled their routes between Dubai - Edinburgh, Dubai - Porto, and Dubai - St. Petersburg.

A logical move, Flydubai will now operate on this route three times a week, beginning February 3, 2021, before running four flights a week from March 28, 2021, and daily from June 1, 2021,

Flydubai will operate using a Boeing 737-800 aircraft, which Ex Yu Aviation says will likely be upgraded to the 737 MAX once it receives regulatory approval to return to the skies.

However, capacity between Zagreb and Dubai will be significantly reduced compared to 2019, offering 57,420 seats on 330 flights. Recall, in the summer of 2019, Emirates offered 137,510 seats on 380 flights on the three-class Boeing 777 aircraft. Thus, Flydubai will operate with a capacity reduction of 58.2%.

Ex Yu Aviation also reports that Flydubai should resume its seasonal summer service to Dubrovnik from May 13, 2021, which would operate until August 27. FlyDubai had also previously announced regular flights to Zagreb from December this winter, which will no longer happen as the airline withdrew all flights on the route until the beginning of February 2021. It is now only a question of when those flights will also be canceled.

Flights to Croatia: Air Serbia Operates Twice Weekly to Zagreb in December

December 7, 2020 - The latest news for flights to Croatia as Air Serbia operates twice weekly to Zagreb in December, slightly reducing its winter flight schedule to the Croatian capital.

Croatian Aviation reports that Air Serbia will operate only twice a week this month between Belgrade and Zagreb. There are also four additional return flights on sale around the holidays.

Namely, in December, the Serbian national carrier operates only twice a week between Belgrade and Zagreb, every Monday and Friday (Monday mornings, Friday evenings).

In November, three flights a week were generally available on this route, but due to reduced demand, the company further reduced its flight schedule to Zagreb, canceling flights on Tuesdays.

However, during the Christmas and New Year holidays, the company will offer, in addition to the already mentioned two flights a week, four more return flights. Flights are announced on Saturday the 19th, Sunday the 20th, Wednesday the 23rd, and Sunday, the 27th of December.

ATR72-200 aircraft operate on all routes. Air Serbia offers a total of 1,584 seats between Zagreb and Belgrade in December.

This summer, Air Serbia operated to Zagreb, Split, and Dubrovnik, to a lesser extent than in the summer of 2019, while direct flights from Belgrade to Zadar, Pula, and Rijeka did not operate.

This news comes after Windrose Airlines canceled certain departures on the route Kyiv - Zagreb - Kyiv.

Namely, because the entry of foreign nationals into the Republic of Croatia is limited after the last epidemiological measures were introduced. Windrose will not fly on the Kyiv - Zagreb - Kyiv line on December 6 and 9 (Wednesday and Sunday), and the normal flow of traffic on this line is expected from December 13. The airline leaves the possibility of additional flight cancellations, which will primarily depend on border measures and decisions of the national headquarters related to the entry of foreign nationals into the Republic of Croatia.

Flights to Croatia: Windrose Cancels Certain Departures to Zagreb in December

December 6, 2020 - The latest news for flights to Croatia as Windrose cancels certain departures to Zagreb in December.

Croatian Aviation reports that due to new epidemiological measures, Windrose Airlines has canceled certain departures on the route Kyiv - Zagreb - Kyiv.

Namely, because the entry of foreign nationals into the Republic of Croatia is limited after the last epidemiological measures were introduced, Windrose Airlines canceled certain flights to Zagreb in December.

The airline sees great potential on the line to Zagreb. In the second month of operations on this line, they recorded an average occupancy of the passenger cabin of a high 72%.

The airline was scheduled to introduce an additional, third flight a week on this route, beginning in December, every Friday, until the end of the winter flight schedule. As confirmed by Windrose Airlines, the reason for not going ahead with additional frequencies is the result of the previously mentioned epidemiological measures and restrictions at the borders that directly affect reservations, both on this route and others. The line will continue to operate twice a week, on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Windrose Airlines plans to increase the number of weekly flights to Zagreb in the summer flight schedule in 2021, provided that the epidemiological situation is much better and that there are no restrictions on international travel to or from Croatia. Confirmation of the potential of this line is in the excellent Load Factor in October and a satisfactory number in November, especially at a time when international travel is kept to a minimum.
