Pink Day Zagreb Rose Wine Festival Celebrates its 10th Edition

April 27, 2022 - On Saturday, April 22, everything was pink in Zagreb's Lauba at the tenth edition of the unique festival dedicated to rosé wine - Pink Day Zagreb. As the initiator, Sanja Muzaferija, always says, the festival is also a celebration of spring, optimism, and gentle, feminine energy with light wines.

The Pink Day Zagreb Festival gathered a large number of connoisseurs, professionals, wine lovers, and visitors who were dressed in pink and were eager to socialize, celebrate spring, optimism, high aesthetics, excellent oils, or, above all, excellent rosé wines from Croatia and Slovenia, Italy, France, USA...

pink_day_zagreb_2.jpg

Pink Day Zagreb combines fun, fine wines, and educational content. It brings together wine connoisseurs, professionals, and "ordinary" lovers of these fine pinky wines, ideal for warmer days. In addition to being a rosé festival, Pink Day Zagreb is a kind of dedication to female energy and the beauty of life, a fluttering ceremony of a rosy worldview. Because rosé is precisely that: bright! During the last ten years, the Festival has established itself due to its educational contents, exchange of experiences, and cheerful and optimistic atmosphere and has consistently promoted moderate consumption of wine and, according to the winemakers themselves, significantly helped to change the attitude towards rosé, and thus the wine map of Croatia.

"I am proud that Pink Day Zagreb helped rosé gain a better reputation. Of course, there is also Green in Pink, which celebrates the top quality domestic extra virgin olive oils. Since last year, the festival has also celebrated pink gins, tonics, liqueurs, cocktails..." said Muzaferija.

This boutique festival, which is also the oldest major wine festival in Croatia after Vinistra and VinoCom, for its special edition, offered more than a hundred labels of wine, about thirty labels of premium extra virgin olive oil, and presented several premium brands of spirits and cocktails, all enjoyed by hundreds of visitors. It was the richest festival program so far. In fact, the entire month of April was covered in pink because at the press conference in Lauba at the beginning of the month, a workshop on the wines of hilly Croatia took place, under the baton of experienced sommelier Mario Meštrović. The story continued on April 18, in Zagreb's only restaurant with a Michelin star, Noel, where a Masterclass of Chateau d'Esclans rosé wine "Pinks That Made History" powered by PBZ Card Premium Visa was held in front of a packed auditorium. The wines were tasted from top Riedel glasses, all under the leadership of Ted Lelekas, Moet Hennessy brand ambassador.

Festival workshops

All accompanying programs of the Festival were extremely interesting this time as well. The "Pink American West," with wines from the American West Coast that are not on the Croatian market, moderated by Mirena Bagur and Croatian Premium Wine Import from Boston, was extremely popular. While Bagur presented the winery and their positioning in the vast American market, her husband and business partner Win Burke spoke about the characteristics and style of each of the five wines that came from the northern part of the American West, Oregon, all the way to Southern California and Napa Valley. Among them was Grgich Hills Rosé by Mike Grgich, a winemaker with Croatian roots and a pioneer of winemaking in the USA. The surprise guest was the top American chef, Johnny Sheehan, who also said a few words about pairing these wines with food.

All connoisseurs and everyone who wanted to know more attended an attractive panel, i.e., a round table dedicated to the rosé wines of the Croatian East - "Rosé Wine East: 10 Years Later" powered by HGK, in honor of the progress of the rosé wines of this region. The moderator was the "chaser" Morana Zibar, and the participants were the representatives of HGK: Jelena Đugum; HAPIH: Darko Cenbauer; Kutjevo wineries: Dino Galić, and Vina Papak: veteran Mladen Papak.

A masterclass on extra virgin olive oils, "Champion Oils of Istria and Dalmatia," powered by JGL, was moderated by an assistant professor from the University of Split, Ph.D. Mirella Žanetić. All visitors there could learn all about the secrets of good oil.

At the very end, at the workshop designed by Vjenceslav Madić, "Master Kishoni": "Pink Cocktalization" powered by Esplanade Zagreb Hotel, lovers of pink cocktails, strange molecular "alchemy" of cocktails and mixology found themselves in awe - because this workshop produced miracles in a glass.

Cooltura i Dizajn: All visitors of the Festival could also buy a limited edition t-shirt with the character "Pink Girl" signed by Marina Dimić Kepeski, who was a member of the jury that chose the most beautifully decorated tables of exhibitors, along with Muzaferija and her partner for Pink Day Zagreb Zrinka Jelić Belinić. In addition to the wines a wonderful atmosphere that is always guaranteed, the Festival is also known for its fantastically decorated exhibition tables. All partners work extremely hard and receive valuable awards for nicely decorated exhibition tables.

This year, Kutjevo won the first prize - 12 Riedel glasses from the Restaurant Extreme Rosé line. Other awards included the pink SMEG toaster model TSF02PKEU by Gemma, which went to Astoria Wines. The Elie Saab fragrance from the Martimex perfumery portfolio, "Le parfum essentiel," was awarded to the Kvarner Wines Association. Bottega won a gift package from the Media Bar publishing house with three books - Stanley Tucci's "Taste," Anđa Marić's "My Revolution in 365 Days," and Arijana Čulina's "Twice in Five Minutes." MIVA Wine Gallery received a rich IKEA package (blanket, cushions, small items for the house...) as a reward for creativity and long-term loyal cooperation.

At the Festival, for the first time in Zagreb, the recently published Media Bar book published by Stanley Tucci, "Taste: My Life Through Food," translated by Nada Mirković. Anyone who wanted could visit Lauba: a house for people and art at the same time, the sales exhibition of the acclaimed and award-winning young Croatian painter Emanuela Lekić "Night Shift."

pink_day_zagreb_4.JPG

Romerquelle was once again the official water of the festival, and Ikea took care of a comfortable lounge where visitors could relax. Visitors also enjoyed the fine delicacies of one of the best bakeries in Zagreb, "Noel Bread & Deli." In a separate food corner, fine snacks from Catering Kvatrić awaited visitors and exhibitors, as well as Miscotti biscuits - which go well with rose wine and were baked especially for this occasion.

All in all, the festival was well worth visiting. For those who couldn't make it, they will get their chance next year at the 11th  edition of the Festival.

The founder of the whole thing is Sanja Muzaferija, who has been promoting wonderful spring wines through this Festival for an entire decade, thus starting the all-round rosé revolution. For the last two years, she has been accompanied by Zrinka Jelić-Belinić from the Z - Eventi & Promotion agency.

The partners of Pink Day Zagreb include PBZ Card Premium Visa, HTZ, HGK, JGL, MIVA Wine Gallery, Ikea, Romerquelle, Bregovita Hrvatska, Riedel, Martimex, Esplanade Zagreb Hotel, Smeg, publishing house Media Bar, Miscotti, Lauba...

9th Pink Day Festival Announced for 21st and 22nd of May at Lauba

May the 6th, 2022 - The 9th Pink Day Festival has now officially been announced, and it is set to take place on the 21st and the 22nd of May, 2022, at Zagreb's beautiful Lauba.

The 9th Pink Day Festival, dedicated to rosé wines (together with the "festival within a festival" dedicated to extra virgin olive oil) GREEN IN PINK by Romerquelle, the official water of the festival, will be held for the first time this year over two days - Saturday the 21st and and Sunday the 22nd of May, 2022.

The 9th Pink Day Festival will also take place in a brand new location, and we're happy and proud to be able announce that it will be in the beautiful Lauba - a house for people and art. In addition to exhibitors of rosé wine and olive oils, we are announcing something else different - Pink Mixology - where our partners will be able to exhibit and the audience will be able to taste some pink gins, tonic waters and cocktails.

We are also looking forward to the After Party in collaboration with Lauba, which will take place outdoors - in front of Lauba, after the end of the exhibition on the first day of the festival, more precisely on Saturday at 19:00.

Pink Day's partners will also decorate their exhibition tables at this edition of the festival, because that is how they'll be able to enter the competition for the most beautiful table of all. Traditionally, Pink Day rewards the most creatively decorated tables with prizes - this time from Foreo, SMEG and Nikel.

Just like before, Pink Day will celebrate rosé wines and sparkling wines; extra virgin olive oils and pink cocktails; spring, hope for better days, a world without war and COVID-19; flowers, femininity, and beauty. It’s actually a two-day attempt to look at theworld through pink glasses! In a word: a celebration of optimism!

Of course, in addition to tasting the products, there are also educational activities and entertainment to be enjoyed. The programme of rosé wine workshops is interesting, as is the one for olive oils and Pink Mixology.

In one of the VIP corners, Pink Day will be joined by Kraš, who, as part of their recently launched #IJaSamDomaćica campaign, is trying to raise public awareness of how women, including those from the world of winemaking and viticulture, oenology or olive growing, are still the main people responsible for taking care of the household. The aim of the campaign is to remind us all that the job of a housewife is demanding and complex, and that in our society there is still a lot of room for improvement when it comes to a fairer distribution of household chores among all family members.

Pink Day is happy to include Visa Premium Card, DS Automobiles and Romerquelle among its partners. We're sure we'll be able to reunite a large number of visitors dressed in pink or decorated in pink, all of whom will be eager to socialise - especially after everything that has happened to us lately. The friend of the Festival this time is VAPT, and Pink Day is being held under the auspices of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Croatia.

8th Pink Day International Festival of Rosé, Sparkling Wines, and Champagnes held in Zagreb

June 29, 2021 - After a one-year delay, the 8th Pink Day was held - the International Festival of Rose Wines, Sparkling Wines, and Champagnes.

In addition to socializing with winemakers and olive growers, this favorite wine event was marked by top workshops, awards, and a new location, MSU, a modern space that filled Pink Day with optimism and joy.

This year, Pink Day was held for the first time on the covered open terrace of the MSU Museum in Novi Zagreb. Although the location and date of the event were changed several times due to epidemiological reasons and the consequences of the Zagreb earthquake, the festival, despite the high temperatures, successfully gathered many domestic and foreign producers of rosé wines, about fifty of them, with more than 100 labels of rosé wines. There was, of course, an important part of the Festival - Green in Pink, which hosted a dozen of the best Croatian producers of extra virgin olive oil.

_DSC8158.jpeg

For the first time, in cooperation with the Miva Wine Gallery, an impressive Masterclass - World of Pink Champagnes by Moët Hennessy Group powered by Premium Visa was organized at the festival, which aroused the huge interest of connoisseurs and was sold out in just a few days. The presenter was brand ambassador Ted Lelakas. Visitors attended two more workshops: Pink Austria, powered by Austrian Wine, organized with the help of the Office of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Regions, and Tourism at the Embassy of the Republic of Austria, dedicated to Austrian rosés, and the workshop of extra virgin olive oils, Istria: Queen of Olive Oil powered by Catering Lisak, under the leadership of the famous Istrian olive expert Edi Družetić, who last year celebrated 40 years of work in olive growing.

_DSC7916.jpeg

For the first time, Pink Day had an official partner country - the Republic of Austria - and the opening ceremony was joined by the Austrian Ambassador, His Excellency Josef Markus Wuketich, accompanied by Consul Gerhard Götz and EBRD Director Croatia, Ms. Victoria Zinchuk, as well as Rada MP Borić, while the festival was officially opened by the president of GSGZ, Joško Klisović.

_DSC8041.jpeg

This year, Pink Day accentuated the sale of wine since last year was extremely difficult for winemakers, and each winemaker received pink bags with the Pink Day sign as a gift from the festival for the sale of their wine. Also, to the delight of the exhibitors, Pink Day continued to award the most imaginative and creatively decorated exhibition table. Last year's award, pink Jimmy Choo shoes, was won by the Italian winery Bottega, and this time as many as 4 awards were given. Ciri with Vlasta Pirnat, academic painter; Maja Kuzmanović, B.Sc. in Architecture; Ivica Mamić, IMC agency, Sanja Muzaferija, journalist and founder of WOW and Pink Day, decided that the main prize, again pink Jimmy Choo shoes - this time model Smokey - worth a thousand dollars, would be won by Enosophia from Feričani. In contrast, the other three prizes were equal. The artwork "DESIDERIO N ° 1 ART MUST BE TASTED" by Austrian artist Andrew Stix, made especially for Pink Day, went to the Kutjevo winery, the collection of Priveé cosmetics Nikel, Croatian innovator Mirjana Brlečić received the Buršić oil mill. The Belje winery won the ingenious Coravin bottle cap worth 300 euros.

_DSC8123.jpeg

Within the mini-project "Drink Pink," which was conceived independently of Pink Day as part of the iVino concept, the founders of journalists Ana Rogač and Iva Kozarčanin, a multi-member distinguished expert jury, evaluated the best rosé wines of their choice and, logically, decided to present - right on Pink Day. In their opinion, the two best calm rosés are, both with 87 points, Trs Franka 2020 from Ilok and Poletti Rosella 2020 from Višnjan, and Kurtalj Brut Rosé is the best sparkling wine.

All visitors received pink glasses as a gift to look at the world more brightly and optimistically after a long pandemic period. They found shade in these hot days in the WOW corner powered by Kraš, where they relaxed in comfortable Meblo Kare furniture - with fine chocolate.

Support for this most-visited one-day wine festival was provided by: PBZ Card Premium Visa, Austrian Wine, Peugeot, Kraš, and Catering Lisak; then Jana, Kare, Jimmy Choo, 21 Production, LU events & Decorations, Hotel Esplanade, Nickel, Print Shop, Eviplast and Solana Ramova.

Sanja Muzaferija, Pink Day founder

‘‘I am extremely proud that this year our partner country is Austria and that, despite still somewhat problematic conditions, five exhibitors are coming from Austria, all under the auspices of Austrian Wine, but I am most looking forward to the exhibition venues of this year's Pink Day filled three weeks before the Festival. It is also important to me that we try, and I believe we succeed, to combine everything: to entertain, teach, cheer and celebrate rosé wines in a rosy mood. And let’s not forget the health and extra virgin olive oils. I thank the media that follow us faithfully and everyone who experiences Pink Day the way I imagined it: as a festival of optimism and enjoyment’’, said Muzaferija.

The ticket price for Pink Day is 150 kuna, while for members of the WOW association it is 50 kuna, and you can buy it at the entrance of the festival.

This year, Pink Day emphasizes the sale of wine, since last year was also extremely difficult for winemakers, and each winemaker will receive ten pink bags as a gift from the festival to sell their wine. Also, Pink Day continues to reward the most imaginative and creatively decorated exhibition table. Last year's prize, pink Jimmy Choo shoes, was won by the Italian winery Bottega, and this time as many as 4 prizes will be awarded. It will again be pink Jimmy Choo shoes: this time a Smokey model worth a thousand dollars, a work of art "DESIDERIO N° 1 ART MUST BE TASTED" by Austrian artist Andrew Stix, made especially for Pink Day, as well as Privee cosmetics Nikel, Croatian innovator Mirjana Brlečić, but also the ingenious bottle cap Coravin, worth 300 euros.

It is a mini-project "Drink Pink" conceived as part of the iVino concept, whose founders are journalists Ana Rogač and Ivo Kozarčanin. The best rosé wines of their choice and judgment decided, logically, to present and announce the winners, right on Pink Day.

Pink Day Through Rosé-Tinted Glasses of Sanja Muzaferija

March 18, 2019 - One of the most eagerly-anticipated Croatian wine events of the year is almost here again. Organiser Sanja Muzaferija talks Pink Day 2019 in Zagreb.

Pink Day returns for its 7th edition later this month. Tell us about the concept and how it got started.

pink-day-zagreb-croatian-wine (3).jpg

On the 30th of March, Pink Day returns for its 7th edition in Mimara Museum in Zagreb. At the WOW (Women on WIne)  association, we have been working hard for almost eight years, meeting at least once a month to taste, discuss and study wine.

So far we have organized or co-organized more than 100 events and on various occasions tasted many interesting wines, promoted Croatian wines, learned about foreign wines and varietals; enjoyed, socialized, and visited wine cellars and vineyards both in Croatia and in Europe.

Our most important and biggest yearly event, Pink Day Zagreb, has rocked the wine scene a bit, especially when it comes to women and rosé wine. It was my idea to slightly provoke the predominantly male wine scene - since seven or eight years ago women in the wine world were still rare birds and more often than not mocked for not being able to differentiate anything but whites and reds.

In fact, women are active in wine business and industry, women own wine bars, work as sommeliers, oenologists, in wine marketing…so we wanted to somewhat subversively start a Festival that highlights rosé wine – like Barbies playing with pink colour – in spite of everybody thinking both women and rose wines are frivolous. And see what happens. What has actually happened is that rosé became highly popular and that women working in wine are much more appreciated that they used to be.

pink-day-zagreb-croatian-wine (1).jpg

Pink Day has grown year on year. What can we expect from this year's event?

Every year the focus is slightly different. In the beginning, we were trying to show the audiences and the wine community that we mean business, so we were serious, “scientific” and scholarly with the international experts who we flew from around the world over to do workshops at Pink Day.

Over the years we have changed and shifted the focus every year – always trying to stay fresh and a little different from other festivals. Sometimes we focus more on extra virgin olive oil within our Green in Pink Festival in Festival, but I think it is safe to say that we constantly grow. Not in numbers, because we are a boutique festival with no intention to gain more exhibitors due to the Museum space which we intend to keep as our home, but in quality.  And popularity. I think there is hardly anybody who is anybody in the wine business that doesn’t know about WOW and Pink Day.

pink-day-zagreb-croatian-wine (4).jpg

With the focus shifts of Pink Day, we hope to remain interesting and fun. This year’s event is focused on Croatian rosé wines and is designed to be even more optimistic, fun, feminine and fashionable than before. Since we have noticed that the exhibitors try hard to be creative with their space and that both their clothes and their tables are regularly adorned with pink details and flowers – we decided to give out an award for the best table of the Festival. The award is pink stilettos by Jimmy Choo worth more than one thousand dollars. We think it will motivate exhibitors to be even more creative and that it will contribute to the overall atmosphere. Although, we are not complaining – our festival is always lively, happy, full of great wines and beautiful women.

Tell us a little about the rosé scene in Croatia. What are the main trends, grape varieties, and what does Croatia do differently?

Croatian rosé is somewhat different because of the grape varieties and terroir – from, French rosé from Provence or Spanish or Hungarian... But so is every wine from some other wine. Nothing specific there. I think Croatian rosé can easily compete with any other from the world.

pink-day-zagreb-croatian-wine (5).jpg

And, of course, the wines from Istria or the ones from Slavonia; those from Kvarner or those from the surroundings of Zagreb or the ones from the south are not the same…That’s exactly why you have to come to this years’ edition of Pink Day. We have prepared three interesting workshops – covering three different areas of Croatia. “Istria & Kvarner” by Mario Meštrović, “Slavonija and Podunavlje” by Dario Grabarić and “Pink Souih” by Jelena Šimić Valentić. Total exploration of Croatian rosé was this year’s topic.

Pink Day was the first public appearance of the wines of Jo Ahearne MW, the first Master of Wine in Croatia a few years ago. Tell us about her Rosina and also the impact of her decision to make wine in Croatia.

pink-day-zagreb-croatia-wine.jpg

It would be much better if Jo would present her wine herself. It is so great to have such an expert and such a nice lady as Jo here in Croatia. We have collaborated with her on a few occasions, not only at Pink day and it was always nothing but pleasure and delight. Just as all her wines. My favourite is Wild Skins that she makes so perfectly. She deeply understands wines and she definitely knows what she is doing, regardless of the colour of the wine. Many winemakers decide to wait until Pink Day to fill their bottles – so Pink Day is a sort of En primeur festival for rosé wines.

As I understand, Pink Day is not just Croatian winemakers. Which other countries will be represented this year?

We have many different countries participating. There will be French, Italian, Austrian, Slovenian and Serbian wines present –as far as I know. Croatian wines are the majority, however – which is in perfect tune with this year's orientation. Next year will be somewhat different again.

pink-day-zagreb-croatian-wine (7).jpg

Your thoughts on how the Croatian wine industry is developing in general?

Shen I first started with WOW and today – incomparable. Much, much better now. Both our wines and the export and the marketing and branding. But there is still a long way to go. It could be much better branded abroad, to begin with. But, no criticism now – we are approaching the most optimistic and fun Festival – Pink Day. For one day in a year we should all deliberately wear pink glasses and enjoy.

You are a multi-talented lady wearing many hats, one of which is running Women on Wine (WOW). Tell us a little about that and how new members can get involved.

My background is first and foremost journalism. I have been writing about theatre, fashion, film – and wine is my hobby and my passion. Pink Day evolved from the idea of WOW. The women who surrounded me at the time in the association when I have just started it – were working very hard and earned no money. Just like me, but that was my choice. It wasn't necessarily theirs.

So I wanted to create a commercial festival in order to give primarily them (and myself) an opportunity to earn some money and do something good for the wine scene – at the same time. That is my characteristic. Typical me:  trying to do as many things at the same time as possible and trying to aim for the win-win situation.

pink-day-zagreb-croatian-wine (8).jpg

In the meantime, some of the ladies left and now they are successfully doing businesses of their own while I am still trying to help out the winemakers, entertain and educate the members of WOW... But, I am not sorry – WOW  is steadily growing – there are almost 200 of us in Zagreb, Split and Rijeka. Everybody can join as long they are female – (maybe we are the only women-only club in Croatia) and pay the membership fee (700 kuna per year in Zagreb, 350 if outside Zagreb)...And - Pink Day is doing well, it is very successful and it does earn some money. Clearly – it makes everybody involved, including the visitors, happy. Me happy!

Working hours of the Festival12 (noon) – 7 p.m., March 30, 2019.

Mimara Museum, Zagreb

150 kuna entrance fee
