October 2, 2020 - Dinamo and Rijeka advance to the Europa League group stage after defeating Flora and Copenhagen on Thursday evening in the final qualifying round.
Dinamo Zagreb secured a spot in the Europa League after beating Estonian club Flora 3:1 in the final qualifying round at Maksimir Stadium. Ademi scored twice for Dinamo in the 26th and 87th minutes, and the first goal of the match was scored by Gavranovic in the 11th. Sinavskij scored for Flora in the 65th.
After losing to Ferencvaros without a chance to qualify for the Champions League, Dinamo will play in the Europa League this season for consolation.
Unlike the last qualifying round of the Champions League, in which two matches were played, only one match was played in the final round of the Europa League qualifiers.
Dinamo's last hurdle to qualify for the group stage was the Estonian champion, Flora. The difference in quality was obvious and Dinamo came away with the win. However, harder than expected.

In the second match on Thursday, Rijeka also secured a spot in the Europa League group stage thanks to a 1:0 (1-0) away win against Copenhagen, Denmark in the last qualifying round.
Rijeka reached the victory thanks to an own goal by Ankersen in the 20th minute.
Rijeka managed to withstand the pressure of the home side in the first 15 minutes, and then from the first offensive action to gain the advantage, which they kept until the end.
Although the match was mostly played in Rijeka's half, Copenhagen did not manage to create any dangerous scoring opportunities to thus give Rijeka the victory.

September 26, 2020 - The Prague-Rijeka route became RegioJet's most successful new line, carrying over 60,000 passengers in both directions!
HRTurizam reports that on Saturday, September 26, the last run of the RegioJet summer railway line from Prague, Brno and Bratislava to Rijeka will start from the Rijeka railway station, ending the first season of the direct railway line from the Czech Republic and Slovakia to the Croatian coast.
All lines ran as planned, operating every day in July and August, and three times a week in September. The average train occupancy was higher than 90%, with a capacity of almost 600 passengers per line, while trains carried a total of more than 60,000 passengers in both directions.
The mentioned line became the most successful new route of RegioJet, which passed through five countries during its operation. Thanks to the close cooperation with the carriers HŽ (Croatian Railways) and SŽ (Slovenian Railways) and thanks to the cooperation with the embassies of Croatia and Slovenia in Prague and with the Croatian National Tourist Board, the train on the Prague - Brno - Bratislava - Ljubljana - Rijeka route and back is prepared for six weeks, points out the Croatian National Tourist Board.
"Demand is a record and the highest in the history of our company, which is why we decided to operate on this route every day until the end of August, and not just three times a week as originally planned. The line will remain in 2021 as well," said Radima Jančure, CEO of RegioJet, when the first train arrived in Rijeka (July 1).
Most of the lines from Prague to Rijeka were completely sold out, and about half of the passengers used connecting buses in Rijeka, which transported passengers to about thirty of the most popular holiday destinations on the Adriatic coast.
As pointed out by RegioJet, buses from Rijeka enabled passengers to transfer to some of the following destinations: Opatija, Rabac, Medulin, Pula, Rovinj, Poreč, Novigrad, Malinska, Šilo, Vrbnik, Krk, Baška, Crikvenica, Novi Vinodolski, Zadar, Sukosan, Biograd, Pakostane, Omis, Brela, Baska Voda, Makarska, Podgora, Podaca, Gradac, Sibenik, Primosten, Trogir and Split.
According to the CNTB, there was also great interest in package deals at sea with two nights and half board at a particularly low price, including transport and all services, which RegioJet sold about a thousand.
Also, the same line is a great solution for Austrians who want to go on holiday to Croatia because they can take the RegioJet bus from Vienna to Bratislava, as well as Germans from the Dresden area who can get to Prague and then by train to Croatia.
Most passengers traveled from the Czech Republic, while approximately 10 percent of tickets were sold in Slovakia.
Due to the great interest in traveling by RegioJet trains to Croatia, this company has already started preparing the railway line for next year, and according to the current plan, traffic will start again from May 2021.
Ticket prices ranged from 22 euro for seats and from 30 euro for a place in a sleeping car, and the price includes a reservation, coffee, breakfast, and free WIFI. An interesting comparison with HŽ, in terms of service, price and comfort.
RegioJet is the leading company for long-distance railway connections in Central Europe, and annually records 20 million passengers, 11 million in rail and 9 million in bus transport.

September 25, 2020 - In Europa League's 3rd round qualifiers, Rijeka topped Kolos in extra time to move onto the playoffs, while Lokomotiva and Hajduk have been eliminated.
Lokomotiva opened the 3rd round qualifiers for Croatian clubs on Thursday and experienced a heavy defeat to Swedish club Malmo, who overcame the Zagreb club 5:0.
Lokomotiva conceded the first goal in the 5th minute when Thelin scored for 1:0. Thelin scored again 10 minutes later for 2:0. Nalic made it 3:0 in the 32nd minute. The second half opened with Larsson's goal in the 52nd minute for 4:0, and Rieks confirmed Malmo's victory with a goal in the 72nd minute for the final score of 5:0.
If it's any consolation, this is not Lokomotiva's biggest defeat in Europe. In the 2015/2016 season, they lost 6:0 to PAOK.
In Hajduk's 3rd round qualifying match, they met Turkish club Galatasaray in Istanbul. The Split club admirably managed to hold their own until the last 15 minutes of the match when a questionable sub by coach Hari Vukas cost them the game.
Galatasaray's Belhanda scored in the 77th for 1:0, and Babel in the 86th minute for the final score of 2:0.
Hajduk otherwise played an equal duel against the Turkish giant but failed to capitalize on many opportunities. This cost them, and Galatasaray wisely took advantage of their exhaustion towards the end of the match.
After Lokomotiva and Hajduk were defeated, the third Croatian representative Rijeka still advanced to the playoff round of the Europa League qualifiers. Rijeka struggled against Kolos Kovalivka, a Ukrainian club that is playing in European competitions for the first time this year. Still, after 0:0 in 90 minutes, they finally beat the guests 2:0 with two extra-time goals at Rujevica.
Escoval's goal in the 103rd minute and Adrijasevic's in the 115th for 2:0 advanced Rijeka to the playoff round, where Copenhagen awaits. To secure autumn in Europe and at least 2.6 million euro, Rijeka must beat the very strong Copenhagen side in the only away match on Thursday.
The Danish club, which is 36th on the UEFA coefficient table, is better placed than, for example, Lazio, Monaco, or PSV. Copenhagen is the most prestigious club not only in Denmark but also in Scandinavia, which is playing in Europe. Copenhagen has not played in a Champions League or Europa League group only once in the last 14 years, and behind them is the second-best European season in history.

September 23, 2020 – Following incredible success with Game Of Thrones, Mamma Mia and others, Croatia filming locations prove to be the best again as HBO's Succession wins 7 Emmys
Historic Dubrovnik was always pretty enough to attract people from far and wide. Dubrovnik has a lot of sights to visit. In addition, it offers many activities such as hiking, cycling, sailing, boat ride, Seabob experience etc. But, following its appearance in TV show Game Of Thrones, interest in visiting the walled city went through the roof. Tourists were not the only ones who wanted to come.
HBO drama Succession is just the latest hit to take advantage of the spectacular scenery while filming in Croatia. The show has just bagged no less than seven prestigious Emmy awards for the season partially filmed in Croatia. In the drama series category, it picked up Emmys for Best Leading Male Role, Best Guest Role, Best Casting, Best Directing, Best Screenplay and Best Picture Editing.

The shooting took place over 12 days in July 2019, primarily on a yacht on which the show's central characters, the Roy family, were taking a holiday. The Croatia filming locations used were the waters around Cavtat, Korcula, Mljet and Sipan. The series ventured into more urban areas of Croatia and, for those scenes, filming locations in Zagreb and Rijeka were sourced. The German-built Solandge was the yacht used in the filming and costs as much as $1.1million (£850,000) to rent for one week.

Now in its third season, Succession centres on the dysfunctional Roy family, owners of a global media and hospitality empire. It stars British actor Brian Cox as the ailing family patriarch with Kieran Culkin heading up the otherwise all-American cast. A total of 613 people worked on the shooting of Succession in Croatia, of which 595 were Croatian (161 film workers, three trainees and 431 extras).

In recent years, major movies such as Star Wars, Robin Hood and one installment in the long-running James Bond series have joined the likes of Game Of Thrones and Mamma Mia in enjoying Croatia filming locations. However, filming in Croatia goes back much further than that. During the 1970s and early 1980s, no less than three Oscar-winning movies used Croatia filming locations - Fiddler on the Roof (1971), The Tin Drum (1979) and Sophie’s Choice (1982).

September 20, 2020 - The giant red star art installation was today placed on a skyscraper, marking the day the Anti-fascist State Council for the National Liberation of Croatia returned Rijeka to its rightful place, as a city of Croatia
A giant red star today appeared over the skyline in the coastal city of Rijeka. Made from shards of bright red glass, the art installation sparkled in the late summer sun as it peered over the edge of a prominent city centre building. The installation is titled Monument to Red Rijeka - a self-defense monument and is by artist Nemanja Cvijanović.
The red star was positioned on the very day that the Anti-fascist State Council for the National Liberation of Croatia returned Rijeka to its rightful place, as a city of Croatia. Rijeka, along with a huge amount of Croatian territory including Dalmatia and Istria had previously been ceded to Italy during World War II by the Independent State of Croatia (NDH).
The NDH was a puppet state of Nazi Germany and fascist Italy and one of the most-lethal regimes of the 20th century. Between 1941 and 1945 they established 22 concentration camps within the paltry territory their fascist masters allowed them to keep. The regime targeted Serbs, Jews and Roma as part of a large-scale campaign of genocide, as well as anti-fascist or dissident Croats and Muslims. Although concentration camps were originally invented by the British in Africa during the Second Boer War (1899 – 1902), the Second World War was the first time such camps were expressly built as death camps. The Independent State of Croatia (NDH) is the only state in the world to have ever had concentration camps just for children. They were located in Jastrebarsko and Sisak.
Rijeka's red star art installation is part of the city's programme for its designated year as European Capital of Culture. An essential element of Capital of Culture is the celebration of diversity. In Rijeka today, people of many different ethnicities and religions co-exist peacefully. Such a situation would never have been possible nor permitted under fascist rule.
The multi-ethnic and multi-cultural aspects of life in Rijeka today can be traced back to the day that the Anti-fascist State Council for the National Liberation of Croatia returned Rijeka to Croatia and subsequently created a state for all Croatians. It is therefore understandable that the city and its residents should wish to commemorate its liberation and return to Croatia in this way. The red star was the symbol on the flag of the Anti-fascist State Council for the National Liberation of Croatia.
The red star symbol remains a controversial one amongst many Croatians as it is inextricably linked to communism. While the people of Rijeka have the right to commemorate their return to Croatia in any way they wish, some Croatians who don't live in Rijeka - or who don't even live in Croatia - are not happy when symbols of communism are used to celebrate liberation from fascism. Perhaps it should be for the people of Rijeka to decide how they wish to mark such a day and those who live in other territories can stick to deciding how their own local manifestations should look?
One group of angry men took to the streets of Rijeka in protest during the same afternoon the star was positioned. Some of them were seen to carry fascist Croatian flags which bore the symbol used by the NDH. Like the swastika and other Nazi symbols, this fascist flag is outlawed in many places such as Austria and Germany.

September 17, 2020 - The latest news for flights to Croatia as Lufthansa announces Frankfurt-Rijeka in 2021.
Croatian Aviation reports that Germany's Lufthansa announced on Wednesday that it would introduce 14 new international routes from its base in Frankfurt in the summer flight schedule in 2021. Among others, the Frankfurt - Rijeka line is being introduced.
In the summer flight schedule, Lufthansa operates to five destinations in Croatia from Frankfurt: Zagreb, Pula, Zadar, Split and Dubrovnik, and from next summer season, the sixth destination in Croatia - Rijeka Airport will be added to the list.
On the line from Frankfurt, Ryanair used to operate to Rijeka, which moved its operations to Hahn this summer season, so Rijeka was without a direct flight with the main Frankfurt airport.
On the line between Frankfurt and Rijeka in the summer season of 2019, the German Condor also operated twice a week, but this year it did not launch that line due to the global pandemic. It will be interesting to see if this German airline returns to Rijeka in the 2021 season.
The new Lufthansa line will operate in the evening: departure from Frankfurt is scheduled for 17:35, and arrival in Rijeka at 19:00. The return flight will depart from Rijeka at 8 pm, while the arrival in Frankfurt is planned at 9:30 pm. The company leaves the possibility of adding more weekly flights on this route, which will primarily depend on the state of bookings. This company operates on the Munich - Rijeka route in the summer flight schedule, but this year it is not in traffic due to the impact of the global pandemic.
Tickets on this new line are already on sale on the Lufthansa website, and all tickets purchased through December 31 this year are flexible which means passengers are entitled to an unlimited number of travel date changes.
This is the third completely new line announced for next year's summer flight schedule. We remind you that Ryanair previously announced a new line Vienna - Pula, while TAP Portugal announced the introduction of the Lisbon - Zagreb line a few days ago.

As Morski writes on the 6th of September, 2020, the keel for the new polar cruiser of the Scenic Group, for the construction of which the Croatian Government issued a state guarantee in the amount of 80.1 million euros, should be laid at the end of this year or the beginning of next year at the 3 Maj shipyard in Rijeka.
Novi list learned the above from Sasa Cokljata, the director of the Scenic Group's company in Croatia, MKM Yachts. As he explained, everything depends on the time and deadline in which it will be possible to supply all the necessary equipment that needs to be installed in the hull of the ship. This is because the plan is to equip the new luxury cruiser as much as possible on the slipway, even to the level that after the launch, all that remains is to do the interior decoration.
After the keel is laid, the contours of the future luxury cruiser should start appearing on the slipway relatively quickly, given that the 3 Maj shipyard's employees began cutting the sheets and making the ship's sections for this vessel back in late April, which will be an improved replica of the Scenic Eclipse.
This 168-metre-long, ultra-luxury polar cruise ship has been moored at the Rijeka breakwater for several months now amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, which has ground the previously booming cruise tourism market to an absolute halt.
The Scenic Eclipse was built in the Pula shipyard Uljanik, and due to the well known financial issues which errupted in that shipyard, Australian shipowner Glen Moroney took the ship immediately after its launch and managed to have it finished in Pula in the middle of last summer.
At the beginning of July this year, ten-year contracts were signed between Rijeka's 3 Maj shipyard and the newly established company MKM Yachts, one on business cooperation and the other related to the sub-concession.
Given that the current production at the 3 Maj shipyard takes place according to a special programme, the model of building a luxury almost 160 million euro polar cruiser has been agreed so that the Rijeka shipyard, as a subcontractor, will build the hull, while the construction of this and four other similar cruisers will be dealt with by MKM Yachts.
By sub-concession, MKM Yachts leased a small part of the Rijeka 3 Maj shipyard, both maritime domain and office space in the main building. At the moment, MKM Yachts' employees are already working extensively in the refurbished premises of the former Technical Office at the 3 Maj shipyard.
They are also in the process of hiring staff because they need to employ another 70-80 experts within this company. Cokljat notes that the company has scanned the base of potential professional staff.
''According to what we've detected, we're convinced that we'll be able to do the majority of the work, even in regard to the part related to the interior of the ship, with Croatian subcontractors and enterprises,'' said Cokljat.

ZAGREB, September 4, 2020 - An agreement for the performance of work under the project "Upgrade of the Rijeka Port Infrastructure - Rijeka Basin" was signed in the northern Adriatic city on Friday.
The agreement is worth HRK 268 million, of which 85% will be co-financed by the Connecting Europe Facility. It was signed by the chairman of the Port of Rijeka management board, Dusko Grabovac, and the CEO of the Kolektor Koling company, Tine Vadnal.
The agreement provides for the reconstruction of 109,420 square metres of road surface, 12,161 metres of railway and 1,625 metres of crane track. The work is expected to be completed by the end of 2022.
The director of the Port Authority, Denis Vukorepa, said that seven projects, worth a total of €132.8 million, had been launched in the past year for the reconstruction and modernisation of the port, adding that the projects were co-financed by the Connecting Europe Facility. He said that documentation was being prepared for new projects in the 2021-2027 period.
Minister of Sea, Transport and Infrastructure Oleg Butkovic, said that the project showed the importance of EU funding, noting that without co-financing from EU funds it would not be possible to increase the competitiveness and strengthen the port of Rijeka. He said that it was important to properly prepare and implement the projects that would be financed from the fund in which €22 billion has been set aside for Croatia. "It will be the biggest test for this government," the minister said.

September 2, 2020 - The latest news for flights to Croatia with updates for Zagreb, Split, Dubrovnik, Rijeka, and Zadar. Israir to Zagreb, SAS and Norwegian Air to Split, and Polish LOT to numerous destinations in Croatia this September.
Croatian Aviation reports that Israir, an Israeli airline based in Tel Aviv, has resumed traffic on the route between Zagreb and Tel Aviv. The line was not in circulation this year because it is seasonal, and due to the pandemic, the company did not launch it earlier.
Regular flights between Tel Aviv and Zagreb started operating on August 19 this year, and so far 8 rotations have been made in August. The company offers departures on its official website throughout almost the whole of September, and as many as 11 rotations are available on this line:
between September 1 and 6, three flights are announced (Tuesday, Friday, Sunday),
between September 7 and 13, three flights are announced (Monday, Thursday and Friday),
between 14 and 20 September, three flights are announced (Monday, Tuesday and Sunday),
between September 21 and 27, two flights are announced (Friday and Saturday).
In last year's summer flight schedule, the company operated with significantly more weekly departures to Zagreb. Night flights, the only regular flights in the Croatia Airlines network, were operated on the regular line between Tel Aviv and Zagreb.
On the Israir Airlines route to Zagreb, there are A320 aircraft with a capacity of 180 seats.
Furthermore, Croatian Aviation reports that Norwegian Air and Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) will continue to operate on their scheduled flights from Scandinavia to Split Airport throughout September.
Although there are restrictions when traveling between Croatia and certain Scandinavian countries, the two mentioned airlines will continue to operate on their scheduled flights to Split Airport through September. The number of weekly flights on all routes has decreased compared to July and August.
Norwegian Air operates on three routes in September
Norwegian will operate only to Split Airport this month, with three direct routes from Oslo, Stockholm, and Copenhagen.
Oslo - Split will operate twice a week in September, every Tuesday and Saturday,
Stockholm - Split will operate once a week, every Saturday,
Copenhagen - Split will operate once a week, also on Saturdays.
Scandinavian Airlines flies to Split
Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) will also keep three routes to Split, from Copenhagen, Stockholm, and Gothenburg. All lines operate once a week, on Saturdays:
Stockholm - Split,
Copenhagen - Split,
Gothenburg - Split.
The Gothenburg - Split route is not for sale on the airline's website, given that it is a charter line. SAS will use A320neo aircraft on all three routes to Split Airport, which have a capacity of 174 seats in the fleet of this carrier.
Croatia Airlines offers one flight a week (Saturdays) on the Split - Copenhagen route, while flights from Zagreb to the Danish capital are daily (certain flights have been canceled on this route).
Finally, although the Polish government announced a ban on flights from several countries from September 2 this year, including flights from Croatia, Croatian Aviation reports that the countries were subsequently revised and Croatia is no longer on the list.
Polish LOT will thus continue to operate on as many as 7 lines to Croatia in September this year:
Warsaw - Zagreb, daily,
Warsaw - Rijeka, once a week, on Sundays (until September 13),
Warsaw - Split, once a week, on Sundays,
Warsaw - Zadar, once a week, on Saturdays,
Rzeszów - Zadar, once a week, on Saturdays (until September 19),
Warsaw - Dubrovnik, four times a week, Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays,
Krakow - Dubrovnik, once a week, on Saturdays.
LOT also planned to operate on the Budapest-Dubrovnik route in September, which was canceled because Hungary has practically closed its borders as of September 1.
