At the suggestion of the Vrgorac city, a meeting of several mayors of municipalities and cities of the Makarska Riviera, central Dalmatian islands, Pelješac peninsula and western Herzegovina took place on Thursday to join forces in presenting the importance of building the Ravča-Drvenik tunnel as a connecting road from the junction Ravče to the A1 highway and the ferry port in Drvenik to the new government, informs vecernji.ba.

The planned road would be 7,36 km long with a 5,6 km tunnel through Rilić.

Besides mayors of Vrgorac, Gradac, Hvar, Stari Grad, Korčula, Pojezerje, Podgora, Trpanj, Sućuraj, Jelsa, Orebić, Vela Luka, Lumbarda and Smokvica and Ljubuški, Čapljina, Čitluk, Gruda and Široki Brijeg from Bosnia and Herzegovina, there were the Split Dalmatia Prefect Zlatko Ževrnja and Dubrovnik-Neretva deputy Prefect Davorko Obuljen.

The President of the Vrgorac City Council Ante Pranić presented the project of the connecting road from Ravče to the highway up to Drvenik at D8 - the main coastal road and the agreements signed by the Croatian Roads and Croatian Highways about construction of this road.

He said, that all required paperwork is done (environmental impact study, preliminary design project, main project, geodetic survey, parcelling surveys and geotechnical investigations), ťhe land acquired and the localisation permit obtained, but the building of the road has not yet started. During the mandate of the previous government, the A1-D8 connection was included in the program of construction and maintenance of public roads for the period of 2013-2016 and based on that program, there was 10.825.000 kn planned for the project documentation.

Traditional Dishes of the Hinterland

(photos: Kozička Poljica i prijatelji)

Whenever I get the chance, I love to ask people about their traditional food. About the food of their grandmothers, about the way it was prepared, about ingredients, specialities, combinations. Mostly, preparing food was about patience, either in preparation or the actual cooking of a dish.

Something in those lines, I found today at the Kozička Poljica i prijatelji FB page. It is a quick summary:

"Since, there are so many TV shows, that are trying to promote some fancy meals and many people, especially younger ones are following these trends, I would like to dedicate this theme to dishes of our hinterland.

While the usual coastal diet is more about light meals, in the hills of the hinterland, the diet was much heartier. The need for caloric food was a way in which the population adapted to the harsh mountainous climate. Beans, potatoes, cabbage, especially sauerkraut were the main ingredients used daily for meals in this area. The most appreciated meals were collards, kastradina, corn, sauerkraut...

Different porridges were used  - cooked from millet or barley (prga) or corn (pura). From dairy, mostly it was boiled cow´s milk or sheep´s milk (varenika) and sour milk as well. Donuts (uštipci) and privrte were used as the main sweet pastries. To quench thirst, water and wine were used and for heavier tasks it was rakija or sauerkraut juice (rasol). "

Vrgorac Christmas Gathering in Pictures

Although, Vrgorac people are (among other things) well known for their very special young wine/goat milk mixture, called Bikla, which they enjoy during their annual autumn gathering called Biklijada, they also like to get together around a Christmas tree on their square. Stalls with sweets and home-made products, something to eat and to drink and even Santa showed up. Must have been a great evening. If you missed it, here are some pictures from the Vrgorac tourist board FB page:

Grape Harvest in Zavojane (Vrgorac)

It is the time of the year for getting out to the fields. In Vrgorac, the grape harvest has begun and soon first bikla will be mixed to provide power and health for the long winter. Here are some pictures from the Zavičajna Udruga Zavojane (FB page) with a statement: "This year´s grapes are of an excellent quality, with an ideal sugar and acid ratio. The weather is very nice and it makes the harvest a very pleasant outdoor activity in the nature."

What a beautiful way of spending a day..
