As VLM/Poslovni Dnevnik writes on the 20th of May, 2019, two respected Croatian newspapers, Večernji list and Poslovni dnevnik, in cooperation with the University of Zagreb and the Faculty of Economics in Zagreb, are set to organise a round table entitled Future in Croatia and a ''time travelling'' exhibition through Večernji list's history.
After successful events already held in Osijek, Koprivnica, Rijeka, Zadar and Split, Zagreb will now play host to this national action launched by the Vecernji list group with the ultimate goal of retaining young educated people here in Croatia in the face of continuing and concerning negative demographic trends.
The event will be opened by Večernji list's Andrea Borošić, Prof. dr. sc. Lorena Škuflić and Prof. dr. sc. Damir Boras.
The Zagreb roundtable will discuss the vital importance of the retention of young and educated people here in the Republic of Croatia, and will be attended by numerous significant figures from across the spectrum of both politics and science in Croatia who have succeeded in standing out in their respective fields.
The first part of the program will conclude with the official opening of Večernji list's exhibition "We've been together for 60 years", which, through interesting and interactive content, will present the rich history of Croatia's media leader, along with an introductory speech from the curator.
At the very end of the program, an interactive forum will be held during which a student contest in writing projects will presented, and the present Večernji list group will reward the excellence of Croatian students.
Guests will be Podravka's dr. Sc. Jasmina Ranilović, PLIVA's Blagica Petrovac Šikić, UVI eSports d.o.o.'s Marko Komerički and the directors and founders of the company Hodajuće reklama Tino Vrbanović and Ante Starčević, who will present their encouraging and successful business ventures and projects which have been realised here in Croatia to all those gathered there.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes on the 17th of May, 2019, the regional student competition, held at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing in Zagreb, marked the completion of the SIM (P) ATIC PLC + Challenge 2019 project.
This project, initiated by the student association EESTEC and supported by the faculties of electrical engineering in Croatia, Slovenia and Serbia, as well as by no less than Siemens, provides the region's young future engineers with a more detailed insight into the issues that engineers usually encounter in industrial automation in order to better prepare for such work out there in the real world.
Three winning teams, one from each country, as well as the overall regional winner were selected. The winning team from Croatia consists of Karlo Hercigonja, Ivan Ratković and Nikola Benazić from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing in Zagreb, from Slovenia, the winners were Urban Aravs, Jernej Štremfelj and Tina Vindiš from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Ljubljana, and from Serbia, the team consists of Uroš Rakonjac, Petar Kovačević and Dejan Bogdanović from the University of Electrical Engineering in the Serbian capital of Belgrade. The regional winner of the competition is the team from Zagreb, Croatia.
Namely, the SIM (P) ATIC PLC + Challenge 2019 competition started back at the beginning of April with theoretical part of the workshop, where university lecturers from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering from Zagreb, Belgrade and Ljubljana held lectures otherwise not covered by the curriculum. In the next phase, the student teams solved the task by which the best two teams in the country qualified for the regional final in Zagreb. Within this competition finale, the finalists presented their respective solutions of the additional part of the task. Each team had ten minutes available to them for their presentations and five minutes to answer the questions from panel members.
Significant knowledge in the field of industrial automation was also demonstrated by other teams, all judged by a panel consisting of three experts from each country.
Each member of the panel evaluated teams from neighbouring countries in the categories of the quality of the created program and their presentation skills. The Croatian members of the panel were prof. dr. sc. Igor Erceg (FER), mr. Sc. Tomislav Pavić (A & C Automation Adria) and B.Sc. Marko Bunić (Siemens), while from Slovenia and Serbia, there were two university professors and one Siemens representative.
"This competition is an excellent example of synergy between faculties, students and economics. Siemens wants to support projects that encourage the development of professional and practical knowledge of future engineers from this area because we're also strategically focused on the areas of automation and digitisation, which were the cornerstone of this competition,'' said Medeja Lončar of Siemens at the award ceremony.

Numerous tourists sightsee and take walking tours in the centre of Zagreb every day, and only recently were they given the unique opportunity to follow in the footsteps of many significant and peculiar women who have made their mark in the history of Zagreb and who are mostly forgotten. The walking tour that will take you to the unknown history of Zagreb women is titled Badass Women, and is brought to you by Iva Silla, a well-known tourist guide from Zagreb, who has previously made a reputation for herself as a creator of unusual tours when she championed her Secret Zagreb tours.
If you pay attention to the street names in Zagreb, you'll notice that, just like anywhere else in the world where the streets are named after significant people, they mostly have the names of the famous men. Were there no women in Zagreb in the history that were worth commemorating in such a way, by giving them streets that will carry their names? And the sad fact is that even the most people of Zagreb, when prompted to remember a significant woman from the history of the city, will remember Marija Jurić Zagorka, and after that they will draw a blank. Marija Jurić Zagorka was the first female journalist in Croatia and the author of very popular novels (enjoyed by many Croatians to this day), who has a monument in Tkalčićeva street. But there must've been other women in the history of the city?
Unfortunately, not many people know of Dragojla Jarnević, also an author, teacher and mountain climber who was only one of the two women included in the picture "Men (sic!) of the Iliryan era", which presents all of the significant members of the Illiryan movement in Croatia in the nineteenth century. The other woman on the picture is Countess Sidonija Erdödy Rubido, popular opera singer of her time. And even less people have heard of Štefanija Falica, born in Šibenik, who joined her husband in the army during the WWI, and came back from the war in a uniform which included a skirt (again, World War One!), and had the officer's rank!
You'll hear more about them, and other similarly remarkable women if you join the Badass Women tour, and join Iva Silla in an original, fresh and deeply inspirational walk around the town. The tour starts at Zrinjevac and takes you all the way to Gornji grad. The tour will leave you understanding a famous sentence by Marija Jurić Zagorka, who once wrote "You only need to open your eyes and look around you to be able to see the army of strong women, walking along every path of life"!

The centre of university student life in Zagreb, the Forum Cinema at the Stjepan Radić campus in Zagreb, will host TEDx University of Zagreb event on June 15. Over the past five years, the conference has presented more than 50 top speakers from Croatia whose achievements are remarkable even in international terms, reports Poslovni.hr on May 15, 2019.
TEDx is an independently organized event under the TED license, a day-long conference with TEDx speeches. What makes TED unique is the fact that a speech cannot last longer than 18 minutes, which means that the speaker has to convey his or her message in a short and concise form. Each TED speech is translated into more than 100 languages to make it accessible to everyone.
Participants will hear a lot of exciting concepts and witness testimonies from science, business, sustainable development, psychology, as well as practical tips on how to make the best of themselves and accomplish their goals. Last year's speaker at TEDxUniversityOfZagreb, Nikolina Sesar, who is a neurosurgeon, brought an actual brain to the stage and explained how it works. The purpose of the conference is to popularize topics that otherwise do not get enough space in the media.
TEDxUniversityOfZagreb recognizes people with great ideas and gives them space and attention they deserve.
Unlike other large conferences, TEDx sells only a hundred tickets. People interested in attending will have to fill out a short questionnaire and explain why they want to visit and how the TEDx experience could help them achieve their goals. The point is that participants can get to know each other in breaks between speeches, and also get in touch with speakers and organizers. At the end of the day, TEDx is about creating a community for better tomorrow!
People interested in attending should keep track of social networks because applications will start soon.
More info about speakers, topics, organization, team members and other information can be found at the social media profiles.

Franjo Tuđman Airport in Zagreb, also known as Zagreb airport, welcomed its millionth passenger this year five days earlier than in 2018, reports AvioRadar on May 13, 2019.
The lucky 'one millionth' was Jela Ravnjak who traveled on the Croatia Airlines flight OU513 from Dublin to Croatia's capital.
“This year’s millionth passenger at Franjo Tuđman Airport was registered on an inbound Croatia Airlines flight from Dublin. We want to point out that this was achieved earlier than ever and is the best indicator of the continuous growth of passenger traffic at our airport,” said deputy director of MZLZ - Zagreb Airport d.o.o. Hrvoje Bradica, who added that the airport also achieved record results in April, with an increase in passengers of 11% compared to April 2018. Furthermore, so far this year, Zagreb airport has recorded a total growth of passenger traffic of 9%.
“We are pleased that this year's millionth passenger at Franjo Tuđman Airport was recorded on one of our flights. Croatia Airlines connects Zagreb with 24 destinations in 22 countries and, through the increase in the number of passengers on our flights, we directly contribute to the increase of passenger traffic at Zagreb airport,” said Slaven Žabo, director of commercial affairs at Croatia Airlines.
“I am surprised and happy. The greeting was great, and the majorettes also welcomed me. I did not expect this. I came from Dublin where I visited with friends. I love to travel and I will gladly take advantage of this award,” said Jela Ravnjak from Velika Gorica who is a doula, a woman experienced in childbirth who provides information, emotional support, and physical comfort to a mother before, during, and after childbirth.
Ranjak received a gift certificate for the Aelia Duty-Free Shop at Zagreb airport and two return flights to one of Croatia Airlines’ destinations.

Museums outside of museums is an event opened yesterday at the Ban Jelačić square in Zagreb, which you will be able to visit during the next week. The idea behind this manifestation is to bring the museums even closer to the broader public, showcasing them on the Zagreb main square.
The project is the brainchild of the curators from the Natural History Museum Nediljka Prlj Šimić and Katarina Krizmanić and artist Nedjeljko Mikac, and their museum and Zagreb Tourist Board were in charge of organizing it at the square. The setup of the exhibition is that there's an wooden installation shaped like a giant bird's nest where seven of Zagreb's museums and one visiting museum will present their collections to the passers-by. Archaeological Museum, Museum of Arts and Crafts, Museum of Contemporary Art, Nikola Tesla Technical Museum, Ethographic Museum and Museum Documentation Centre and the visiting Radboa from Radoboj are participating this year. The event was organized last year for the first time, and attracted over twenty thousand visitors.
The biggest attraction of the exhibition this year is a replica of a dinosaur from Istria from the Theropoda family, which is believed to have walked the Earth 135 million years ago, as well as the models of fish and lizzards fossils from the ancient seas. The dinosaur replica was made by the sculptor Marin Marinić, helped by the paleontology experts. The Etnographic Museum presents their collection of head-covering items, titled "Hats Down!" Museum of Contemporary Arts created a program to mark the tenth anniversary of their move to their current, Novi Zagreb location, which shows more of the architecture of the building itself. Technical Museum Nikola Tesla created a program to mark the International Day of Letter Writing, showing some of the items that are usually not shown to the public, such as the automatic mechanic pencil.
Too bad that the extreme spring weather might bring down the number of visitors to the Museums outside of museums exhibition!
ZAGREB, May 8, 2019 - The newly-established Zagreb Film Office, which will provide comprehensive services to film productions in Zagreb and promote the city, was presented at a news conference on Wednesday.
Zagreb has a long film industry tradition and fantastic locations for film sets, and the city authorities have therefore decided to make yet another step forward in one of the most lucrative industries, said Office head Mia Pećina Drašković.
The purpose of the office is to make the job easier for numerous crews that are making or will be making films in Zagreb and to promote local tourism, she said, adding that the office currently employed three people.
Director Vinko Brešan, who heads Zagreb Film, the institution of which the Zagreb Film Office is part, said that Zagreb had functioned well so far in providing services to the film industry and that now it would function even better.
The establishment of the Zagreb Film Office was supported also by Mayor Milan Bandić and Croatian Audio Visual Centre (HAVC) head Chris Marcich.
Marcich said that there were five film offices in Croatia and that they operated successfully, which, he said, was largely owing to the HAVC's programme of incentives Filming in Croatia, which had been introduced in 2012 and which had yielded excellent results.

ZAGREB, May 8, 2019 - A new Gamma Knife device valued at 45 million kuna was officially presented on Tuesday at the University Hospital Centre Zagreb (KBC), which is a huge technological step forward in radiosurgery in this part of Europe.
This "invisible knife" quickly and painlessly treats pathological processes in the brain. The nearest similar apparatus can be found in Vienna or northern Italy or in Moscow to the east, it was said at the presentation.
"We used to conduct 380 gamma knife procedures a year. With this piece of equipment, we will probably achieve 700 procedures a year," the head of the KBC Zagreb neurology department, Zdravko Heinrich, said.
Gramma Knife treatment is covered by Croatia's Health Insurance Institute (HZZO) while patients referred from neighbouring countries pay the full price. "A lot of patients come from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Kosovo and we have signed contracts with those countries' health insurance agencies that pay the KBC the full commercial price," the hospital's director, Ante Ćorušić, said.
The KBC Zagreb received support from the Ministry of Health and EU funds to obtain the Gamma Knife and Health Minister Milan Kujundžić and Regional Development and EU Funds Minister Gabrijela Žalac attended the ceremony, expressing their satisfaction with this huge step in Croatia's health system.
Eighty-five percent of the cost of the Gamma Knife was covered by an EU grant from the Competitiveness and Cohesion Fund from which 274 million kuna has been granted for highly sophisticated equipment for Croatian hospitals.
