January 6, 2021 - The latest news for flights to Croatia as Flydubai delays Zagreb return to May 2021.
Ex Yu Aviation reports that Flydubai has delayed its Zagreb return until May 14, 2021, and will run on a daily basis once restored. Flights between Dubai and Zagreb were initially to resume on March 29.
Recall, Flydubai is replacing the famous Emirates, which has temporarily canceled the line to Zagreb and will not operate on it in 2021, due to the impact of the pandemic.
Flydubai had initially announced it would operate its first flight to Zagreb at the end of March 2021 and would run four times a week on this route through April and May, every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Now, Flydubai should operate daily from its new start date (May 14) until September 5 next year.
It was announced earlier that the number of weekly flights from September 6 will be reduced to four (Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays) until the end of October.
Flydubai will operate on the Zagreb - Dubai route with narrow-body aircraft type B737-800, and in the summer flight schedule, it plans to perform as many as 164 return flights.
This low-cost airline will offer more than 57,000 seats between Dubai and Zagreb in the summer flight schedule, which is significantly less than in 2019 when Emirates operated on this route with a B777-300ER wide-body aircraft with an average capacity of 358 seats per flight (in 2019, more than 152 thousand seats were available on this line, so the number of seats offered on this line will be lower by over 60% compared to 2019.)
Apart from the smaller capacity, the Dubai - Zagreb line will no longer have a first-class seat offer for which Emirates is world-famous. The number of offered seats in business and economy class will be drastically reduced. Nevertheless, the return of Flydubai to Zagreb will enable Emirates passengers to continue their journey to Zagreb with a partner company, which is very important for the market's recovery next year.
Flydubai also plans to return to its second destination in Croatia - Dubrovnik. The Dubai - Dubrovnik line should operate from May 13, twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays. From June 25, the airline plans to add a third weekly flight (Fridays), and scheduled flights are announced until the end of September next year.

January 4, 2021 - An Index.hr investigation has revealed that Zagreb Mayor Milan Bandic took HRK 3.35 Million from schools and gave it to the Snow Queen skiing competition instead.
The earthquake in March severely damaged several schools and kindergartens in Zagreb, and the coronavirus pandemic revealed that some schools did not have hot water or soap to wash students' hands and maintain basic hygiene. When distance learning began, we learned that the system did not work and that teachers did not have the equipment to provide quality teaching.
Zagreb Mayor Milan Bandic ignored all these problems or even mocked them, saying that students could wash their hands with ashes, just like he did as a child.
Index.hr. has now learned that Bandic took HRK 3.35 million from the Education Office in one of the last decisions in 2020. Namely, on November 30, 2020, Bandic issued a Conclusion on the redistribution of funds planned in the City of Zagreb Budget for 2020 and transferred money from the Education Office to the Sports Office.
"Funds of HRK 3,350,000.00 are transferred from the City Education Office to the City Sports and Youth Office for the activity of a Great Sports Event, to provide the necessary funds for the international sports event, the Snow Queen and the Snow King Ski Cup 2021," reads Bandic's explanation.
In the second part of the explanation, the Snow Queen is praised as a manifestation that contributed to skiing interest. On the other hand, in the Official Gazette, there are only 273 registered skiers in the Zagreb area, who, if they want quality skiing, must train outside Croatia.
"The Snow Queen has become a trademark of the City of Zagreb and the Republic of Croatia, giving the City of Zagreb, at the time of the event, a special charm and atmosphere," reads the explanation at a time when it was already known that the race would be held without spectators and that it would not bring anything to Zagreb except a snow trail surrounded by mud. The Bandic City Administration was also aware of that.
"Due to the possible lack of snow and high temperatures, as well as climate change, it is necessary to continue to improve the snowmaking system and infrastructure to prepare the track in time and to avoid possible race cancellations, which occurred in 2014 and 2016," reads the explanation of the Conclusion, by which the money is taken from schools and given to the ski competition.
By the way, the total budget of this year's competition is HRK 21 million, of which at least a third, or seven million kuna, is paid directly by the city from the budget, from taxes and surcharges collected from citizens. The remainder comes from the work of Zagreb Holding employees and the last HRK 3.35 million stolen from children, says Index.
The Zagreb Education Office does not see anything disputable because HRK 3.35 million went to the Snow Queen.
"We emphasize the fact that the redistribution of planned budget funds is common at the end of the calendar or budget year. Because funds for the reconstruction of damaged buildings are provided and paid following the phases of the work performed, the unspent funds were redistributed in the budget of the City of Zagreb for other city offices," said Ivica Lovrić, head of the Education Office, to Index's inquiry.
In the same response, in addition to praising themselves for everything they have done since 2016, it states that the earthquake "damaged 175 educational facilities, of which 162 have already been renovated, and the reconstruction of the remaining 13 is underway. Their restoration will be completed in the next year or two, depending on the type and extent of damage to the individual facility."
Everything is fine, claims Lovrić; you just have to wait a year or two.

January 4, 2020 – A map showing production across the former Yugoslavia details the sustained prosperity of many Croatian favourites as some of the strongest Croatian brands are shown not only to have survived but have succeeded following independence
Media across Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia have surprised younger readers and reminded older readers with the publication of a map detailing production in the former Yugoslavia. While this trip down memory lane has caused a range of reactions across the countries of the former republic, looking at the map from a purely Croatian perspective gives some enlightening information. Namely, many of the strongest Croatian brands visible on the map are recognisable today. Some of the strongest Croatian brands not only survived independence but have since grown.
Bajadera - one of the most popular products made by Zagreb-based chocolate and confectionery manufacturers Kraš
Zagreb-based chocolate and confectionery manufacturers Kraš, Požega-based confectionery and drinks manufacturers Zvečevo, oil company INA, Koprivnica-based food company Podravka and Koprivnica-based pharmaceuticals company Belupo, vitamin drink Cedevita, Varaždin-based food company Vindija, Vukovar shoemakers Borovo, Varaždin clothes designers and manufacturers Varteks and multi-use condiment Vegeta are just some of the strongest Croatian brands that are present on the map. You are still likely to see these brand names on many Croatian high streets. Some have succeeded in reaching further into international markets since Croatian independence.Croatian-made condiment Vegeta is sold all over the world
Of course, not every brand visible on the map of Yugoslavia production has fared so well. In their coverage of the map, Ri.portal reminds that “Some of the Yugoslav products were used by literally the whole world - ships, cars, planes, trucks, weapons and even computers were produced... However, many of these companies no longer exist or are bankrupt.”
In their coverage of the map, Bosnian website Klix reminds that Croatian shipyards Uljanik in Pula and 3 Maj in Rijeka were at world level and produced large ships for customers from all over the world. Split-based shipyard Brodosplit, which can also be seen on the map, survives to this day.
Croatian vitamin drink Cedevita comes in a range of flavours
Ri.portal goes on to remember that Yugoslavia was one of only five countries in Europe at the time that manufactured its own computers. “Probably the most famous is the Galaxy, while the first computer produced was the CER-10,” they say. One of the Yugoslav computer makers on the map, popular in the late 1970s, was Digitron, based in Buje in Istria.
Sadly, not all of the strongest Croatian brands have made it until today. Famous tractor and agriculture equipment manufacturer Tomo Vinković of Bjelovar is no longer in production. Their famously-reliable machines are much in-demand on the secondhand market. Two new tractor manufacturers, Hittner doo and the Prima tractor factory still make tractors in Bjelovar.

"This is the most damaged village, there is practically no whole house," says the deputy mayor of Glina. “Both new and old have collapsed,” he adds.
"Deep condolences to the families of the people who died, five people died here, as a kind of curse, a big thank you to everyone who helps, both those who have a job and those who volunteer. This is a commonplace in Croatian history. They must know that we are with them. In such situations there is no Zagreb, Petrinja, we all have an equal right to a new beginning. Five people died here, evil fate, what can I say.
The army is helping as much as it can, unfortunately, there is no water in the barracks in Petrinja, trouble never comes alone," Milanovic said.
"The state is already helping, doing everything it can, but I am not the prime minister. People, citizens are desperate and scared. People in Petrinja were also angry yesterday, because of the feeling that they were left and forgotten," he added.

It used to be hard to live there, before the war it was a rich village, it had public lighting. Now there is nothing like entering the twilight zone," she tells us.
"A lot of people called us, 10 containers are leaving Poreč, 4 containers from Zagreb, this is the first tour. The first village to receive containers are Majske Poljane ... I have now invited people from each village to visit everything and make list, to drive containers directly to them."

She and her family are in accommodation provided by the military.
“They received us nicely, I am really grateful for the help, I cannot express that gratitude to the soldiers who are helping us.
"At my parent's, one chimney fell into the house, the other fell outside. The tiles have fallen off, I hope this can be fixed. Unlike the center of Petrinja, I saw pictures, a disaster," he says.
He says nylon is important to them now to cover holes in houses.
"Nylon is important to cover that. I don't know if they even enter the house while they're still shaking. Nylon is needed first hand, tiles later, if necessary," the woman says, adding that she is sure the government will to meet the victims.

9:19 The ground is constantly shaking
"The ground is not at rest, new earthquakes are felt almost constantly. Today there were three strong earthquakes, three relatively strong earthquakes in 15 minutes. It is difficult to calm the citizens who experienced those horrors yesterday. But after each strong earthquake a whole series follows earthquakes that are weaker, but the stronger that major earthquake was the longer the series of aftershocks, and they can be stronger," seismologist Kuk told Studio 4 just now.
9:18 "We heard a scream"
N1 reporters in Majske Poljane talked to people who were left without their homes.

He says many have called and offered help.
He says that today we need to ensure that these people have accommodation. “I believe we will be able to say tonight that most people are taken care of,” he says. "Glina and its surroundings are without water, there is no electricity around Petrinja," says Žinić, adding that basic groceries are most needed. "Everyone who wants to should announce themselves through the Civil Protection Headquarters. If it is not coordinated, then it creates difficulties for us," said Žinić.

We were in constant communication with the ministers and everyone all day and night, we were in sync and I hope it wasn’t a big trauma for the patients.
The least severe patients are taken care of in the Arena. We had a total of 74 entries, those who were at home also came to work.
Our patients are in the safest building, our hospital is the newest. I think it is good that they feel safer in that way as well, "said Professor Lukšić from KB Dubrava for HRT.

"Since midnight, there have been 40 earthquakes in the Petrinja area over 2 and 10 over 3 on the Richter scale, and from 6.15 two to three stronger. The series continues, the number of earthquakes is huge," seismologist Fiket told HRT.

7:30 Grmoja: The fellowship and heart of our people fill me with pride
"They just returned from Petrinja, Glina and the surrounding villages. A lot of people came to help, mostly Boys, but since there was no coordination, people organized themselves and toured the villages. This was done by several of our teams, so we came to houses no one has visited.
Since there is no water we shared it the most. Fear is felt everywhere, people are warming themselves by the fire in front of their houses or sleeping in cars, but their spirit is still unbreakable. When asked how you are and where you will sleep tonight, they answer: "If we survived the war, we will survive this too!"
Now we will sleep for a few hours and again at 5 am we leave for Petrinja and Glina.
We will meet our Bulj, who left for Petrinja and Glina at midnight with a full truck and van, and another truck will leave tomorrow. The heart of Sinj seems to be beating hard.
Maligani and Torcida did not fail, and neither will Armada. Our Marin Miletić starts with a large team from Rijeka.
Sladoljev and the Boys are where they need to be, with the people.
The scenes of the demolished homes are sad and shocking, but the solidarity, togetherness, and heart of our people, fills me with pride," Nikola Grmoja wrote on Facebook.

7:26 And the inhabitants of Pokupsko spent the night outside
Great damage was also recorded in Pokupsko, and many residents spent the night outside their houses. Some of them were located in Velika Gorica, and some of them spent the night in cars in front of their houses. This was said by the mayor of Pokupsko, who appealed for help: "We need construction materials and help in the reconstruction."
"We have food and something to get, our headquarters is meeting at noon, so we will see what we will organize next," he said.
6:54 There are about 200 people from the HGSS on the ground
"The sun is coming out, we hope it will be a little easier, we just had two earthquakes, people woke up immediately, we are ready to move on. The situation is under control if we can say that, people are constantly on the ground, the tour is getting ready. We are working nonstop, we didn't stop all night.
Immediately after the earthquake, we called upon the whole of Croatia, but in the end, we sent some back home because we had too many people. Everyone is involved, we all work, the whole of Croatia is here. At the moment, there are about 200 of us in the field," said the head of HGSS, Josip Granić.
"We visited 84 villages and hamlets, from Sisak to Kostajnica, there we find people, some outside houses, some in cars, looking for food, water, something to warm up, and it is delivered to them. We get reports that no one was in a village, but it turns out that our people or firefighters are already there," Granic added.
"It is difficult for me to assess where it would be better or worse, the villages from Petrinja to Hrvatska Kostajnica are significantly affected, you have houses that are older and intact, and you have new 15-year-olds homes that have been razed to the ground. There are still people in all those villages," Granic said.
"The simplest thing would be to contact HCK, they will get advice on what help is needed and where to deliver it. Thank you all, but we have nowhere to go with everything we are getting at the moment. So we ask citizens to contact the Red Cross if they want to help," Granic said.
6:38 "Some spent the night in cars freezing"
"A minute or two ago, we felt an earthquake. It's the same in Glina, nothing better, part of the people we accommodated, part of them didn't want to leave their houses, they spent the night in cars freezing, a lot of people were taken care of. We have about 35, 36 settlements affected by the earthquake. Help is coming from all sides, it's hard to say what we need most, tents for sure, but during the day we will know better. Somewhere houses have been razed to the ground, chimneys have fallen off," the mayor of Glina told HRT in the morning. "Unfortunately, we have five dead. We pulled two out of the rubble."
6:36 The mayor of Petrinja contacted HRT
"It shakes non-stop, we feel that tiles are falling in the city; when it shakes, what is left to fall, falls. One sleepless night is behind us, it is one huge catastrophe, a huge pressure. This morning, when the earthquake happened, the Prime Minister called me," Dumbović told HRT.

December 29, 2020 – Just after midday on 29th December 2020, yet another powerful Zagreb earthquake has shaken the buildings and streets of the Croatian capital
Just 24 hours after a second large earthquake shook the Croatian capital in 2020, yet another large Zagreb earthquake has visited city residents. The large tremor took place just after midday and sent the city's citizens into the streets, fleeing shaking buildings from which masonry fell. Dust filled the air outside. Everyone is thankful for having their COVID masks. The situation at the epicentre of the earthquake, just over 40 kilometres from Zagreb, is much worse.
A 5.5 magnitude earthquake hit the capital yesterday, its epicentre located in Petrinje. The Zagreb earthquake of 29 December 2020 was even bigger - it measured 6.3 - its epicentre also in the area of Petrinja and Glina in Sisak Moslavina County. This means that the three largest Zagreb earthquakes to have taken place over the last 100 years have happened in 2020.City residents ran out onto the streets after this earthquake
This Petrinja/Zagreb earthquake took place 44 - 46 kilometres southeast of Zagreb. Hundreds of smaller aftershocks were felt over the 24 hours in the Petrinje area. The Petrinja/Zagreb earthquake of 29 December 2020 didn't feel like any of the hundreds of aftershocks that have visited Croatia since the large earthquake in the start of the year - this was much more like the first. Damage to Zagreb from the first major earthquake of 2020 is estimated to have already cost the city in excess of 11 billion Euros. That first major tremor occurred early in the morning, while people were still in bed - the Coronavirus lockdown meant everyone was inside their homesOffice workers and people going about their daily lives ran out onto Heizelova to escape the shaking buildings and the dust that filled the air
At the time of publishing, no details had yet reached TCN in regards to casualties from the earthquake of 29 December. No casualties were recorded from the previous day's earthquake. EDIT: Less than an hour after the earthquake, it was reported that sadly a child died in the Petrinja area as a result of the earthquake.
