Weather reports across Croatia have been bursting at the seams with news of the upcoming storm. “Arctic air!” “Polar temperatures!” But we’ve heard all of that before. While we all prepare our homes and bundle up for what is meant to be an chilly ride, what should we really expect in Dalmatia?
Abundant rains and the prospect of snow on the central Adriatic Sea and the Dalmatian hinterland are likely. The coast, including the islands, could also see moderate snow and a strong storm in the second part of the day with hurricane gusts of wind. The sea will be corrugated and rough, with bigger waves in the south of the Adriatic, where strong and stormy winds will blow especially in the second part of the day, with the potential of snow in some places. But before snow there will be rain, and even rain accompanied by thunder, reports Slobodna Dalmacija and HRT on January 5, 2017.
According to information from inland Dalmatia, snow is already falling in the Sinj area, and during the day it is possible to see snow in Dalmatia, and even on the islands!
The highest daily temperature on the coast today will not exceed 9 degrees, and the mountains will range from -2 to 3 degrees Celsius.
The coldest temperatures will be in Gorski Kotar and Lika, and with a strong and stormy bura wind that will be extremely cold in the northern Adriatic.
The next few days will be much colder, with many temperatures in the minus. Moreover, over the weekend morning air temperatures will be lower and in some places they are likely to reach about -20 °C, especially in the mountains. Snow is possible not only on land but also on the Adriatic, and even on the remote islands.
On Friday the temperatures will be lowered to values rarely experienced at sea in early January, occurring not only on Friday and Saturday, but most likely through Sunday morning as well, until the wind weakens.
Traffic Information to look out for:
Snow hampers driving in Lika, Gorski Kotar, central Croatia, Slavonia and the Dalmatia hinterland, reported the Croatian Automobile Club (HAK) on Thursday.
In central Croatia, Slavonia, and Lika there will be fog. Reduced visibility on the highway A1 between Bosiljevo and Gospic, A3 Bregana-Lipovac between Križ and Lipovac and A11 Jakuševec-Lekenik.
Because of the low temperatures there is the possibility of black ice, especially on bridges and overpasses.
A1 motorway between Zagreb and Šestanovac, the A6 Rijeka-Zagreb (full length), as well as State Road DC1 between Karlovac and Split and the old road through the mountainous area DC3 are open to all categories of vehicles.
The winter conditions prohibit trucks with trailers and semi-trailers while other vehicles must have winter equipment, in certain sections, in Lika and the Dalmatian hinterland. Winter conditions on the A1 motorway between Šestanovac and Ravča and through the tunnel Sveti Ilija.
Rised trucks must be reinforced at the border crossing Pasjak.
The termination of the catamaran lines: Mali Losinj-Rijeka, Ubli-Vela Luka-Split-Hvar; and ferry service: Sumartin-Makarska. Catamaran on line 9608 Jelsa-Bol-Split will sail from Stari Grad-Split, without docking in ports Bol and Jelsa.
