Cheap Eats: Your Guide to Dining on a Budget in Split

By 12 January 2017

One thing is for certain in Split: there is no lack of wonderful food options, whether you're looking to fine dine or eat on the cheap. In 2016 alone we saw a trend of new restaurant openings that brought everything from burgers to Mexican food to the streets of Split, and we're here to bring you some of the best options under 50 kuna in the city center.

Toto's Burger Bar: As we mentioned above, Split saw a burger revolution in 2016. With the burger takeover came Toto's, serving you a fair share of burgers, hot dogs, salads, sandwiches, and healthy eats like pumpkin soup or veggie noodles. You can get any of the burgers on Toto's menu for under 50 kuna, and you can even get a Classic Burger "combo" that includes fries and a drink for 50 kuna. Hot dogs are all under 30, and the salads and most of the specialities are all under 50 kuna.

Kantun Paulina: A Split institution, this is the place to go to for a classic čevapčići sandwich. A 10-piece čevapčići sandwich comes in at 32 kuna, and you can choose from chicken filets, sausages, or hamburgers all for under 30 kuna. You can even get a half liter of beer for 15!

Sexy Cow: Also new to town last year, Sexy Cow has quickly become a favorite amongst "wrap connoisseurs". Homemade tortillas, special sauces, and handcut pomfrit are just a few of the things that make this new fast food establishment special. All of the wraps on the menu are under 50 kuna, and you can even take your pick of salads for under 40. A healthy helping of pomfrit will set you back 15 kuna.

Rizzo Sandwich Bar: The Croatian "Subway", but so much better! With a couple of locations spread throughout the city, this sandwich bar helps you make your own sandwiches with only the freshest Croatian meats, cheeses, and seriously good baguettes. A filling sandwich with all of the fixings will run you no more than 25 kuna.

To Je Tako: Mexican food made its way to Split last summer, and while this establishment is hibernating until Spring, it is your go-to for a taste of Mexico at a price that will make your wallet happy. Burritos, tacos, quesadillas, nachos, salad bowls, and even huevos rancheros for brunch are just some of the many options available here - and your belly will be full for around 50 kuna.

Misto Street Food Factory: A Dalmatian take on street food, Misto also joined the newbies to Split last year. Essentially everything on the menu is under 50 kuna, and you can choose from beef heart and veal liver sandwiches, stuffed peppers, pastas, and salads.

Mama Burger Bar: Another new establishment where you can grab a burger and fries for under 50 kuna, Mama also offers wraps, salads, chicken nuggets and club sandwiches. Mama serves up burgers that are classicly American, and they even have American coffee for those of you craving something a bit different in Split.

Surf 'n' Fries: Fries, chicken nuggets, chicken sandwiches, and a whole lot of tangy fry dips to choose from, Surf 'n' Fries also offers menu specials to fill up the family.

While these are just a few of the city center options available in Split when eating on a budget, don't forget to keep in mind fast food favorites Popaj and Bas Burek, and vegetarian favorites Makrovega and Vege!
