Split sees snow fall from the sky this afternoon, making it the first time the city has seen snow since the winter 2013.
Although barely visible to the naked eye and too weak to settle onto the ground, the first snowflakes have fallen in Split to the delight of the citizens of the city. While I happened to be in a meeting and missed the initial snowfall, flurries were still floating mid-air on my walk home around 15:30 - although too small to capture with the lens of my camera phone.
Snow first began falling on parts of the central Dalmatian islands, then began to fall in the wider area of Omiš, near Makarska, the hinterland of Split, Šibenik, and just before 15:00, in Split. The last time the city recorded snowfall was February 10, 2013, reports Dalmacija News on January 16, 2017.
Split this afternoon recorded only light snowfall with an air temperature of 3 degrees Celsius (15:00 Marjan Split, MHS). Solin, Kaštela, Trogir, and Čiovo recorded snow as well.
Precipitation will intensify until the evening, making it possible to create a thinner snow cover.
