Split in History: 50 Years Ago Today Hajduk Wins First Ever Yugoslav Cup Trophy

It’s always nice to recall the rich history of our beloved football club HNK Hajduk Split, especially when it comes to celebrating the 50th anniversary of the club’s first Yugoslav Cup trophy.

Precisely 50 years ago today, on May 24, 1967, Hajduk became the conqueror of the Yugoslav Cup for the first time in history with a 2:1 victory over Sarajevo, announces Hajduk.hr on May 24, 2017.

This accomplishment did not come easy, and it took Hajduk four attempts to finally win the Cup after being previously defeated in the finals three times. In 1953 and 1955, Hajduk was beaten by BSK Belgrade, and in 1963, by Dinamo Zagreb.

The generation that won the Yugoslav Cup in the 1966-67 season has, as you would imagine, a special place in the club's history.

Before the finals, Hajduk defeated: Metalac from Zadar, Dinara from Knin, Šibenik, Borovo, Željezničar from Sarajevo, Vardar from Skopje, and in the final, Hajduk defeated Sarajevo 2:1 with goals from Miroslav Ferić and Zlatomir Obradov.

In the historic match against Sarajevo,  the Hajduk roster included Radomir Vukčević, Milutin Folić, Aleksandar Ristić, Dragan Slišković, Vinko Cuzzi (captain), Miroslav Bošković, Džemaludin Mušović, Petar Nadoveza, Miroslav Ferić, Ivica Hlevnjak and Zlatomir Obradov.

The coach of the club was Dušan Nenković, assistants Ante Mladinić and Vojimir Kačič, and longtime physiotherapist Božidar Soldo. The club’s president was Josip Grubelić and the secretary was Marko Vušković.

This cup was the first of a total of 15 cups won in the history of Hajduk. Hajduk became the winner of Cup as part of former Yugoslavia in 1967, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975/1976, 1976/1977, 1983/1984, 1986/1987 and 1990/1991, and as independent Croatia, Hajduk raised the cup trophy six times in 1992/1993, 1994/1995, 1999/2000, 2002/2003, 2009/2010 and 2012/2013.

The trophy for the Yugoslav Cup, which Hajduk captain Vinko Cuzzi had the honor of raising first back in 1967, is displayed at the Hajduk clubhouse.
