Have you noticed banana peels taking over the streets of Split lately?
If you’ve walked around Split over the last few weeks, you’ve more than likely almost “slipped” on what you thought was a real banana peel.
Hundreds of “bananas” have recently blasted the slippery floors of Split’s Old Town, and the stickers, which have caught the eye (or foot) of most of us, must be there to send some message - but what?
While I tried finding the answer myself, others in the Split Expat Group asked the same question.
“Does anyone knows why streets of Split are full with banana peel stickers? Whatever this is supposed to represent, it’s just ugly,” said one group member.
Another group member responded that they might be there to show the end of the summer discounts for flip flops, while others assumed maybe they were sending a message to tourists to beware of our slippery stone streets.
The latter may be right on point, and today, we finally have an answer.
As it turns out, the stickers are there to send a message - and they are there to send a message to the mayor, reports Dalmatinski Portal on September 13, 2017.
“The installations by an unknown author have once again actualized the neglect of city services and irresponsible politics that for decades has not been able to solve the anti-slip foundation on the stone slabs of Krešimirova, Dioklecijanova and other streets - these are not monumental artifacts, and there is no issue of them being original.
We believe that the new mayor Andro Krstulović Opara will find a way to efficiently solve this small but serious problem because otherwise, an unnecessary lawsuit will take money from the city budget,” said the Association Green Dalmatia.
I know that I have slipped on these floors more than once, and especially now that the rainy season is ahead of us, this doesn’t sound like such a bad idea.
Whether or not the message will get across to Split’s mayor remains to be seen.
Stay tuned!
