Healthy Habits: Split Joins World in Celebrating Day Without Cars

By 18 September 2017

On Friday, September 22, 2017, the world encourages motorists to give up their cars for a day.

To mark the World and European Day without a car, the City of Split will host a public event focused on healthy habits. The event, which is organized by the Croatian Chamber of Clinical Counselors (SDC) and its partners in Split-Dalmatia County, Split, and the University Department of Health Studies, will be held on Friday, September 22, 2017, reports Dalmacija Danas on September 15, 2017.

The event is conceived through a series of activities focused on public health that will take place through a morning and afternoon program.

The morning part of the program will be held at Bačvice Beach from 9:00 to 10:00 where all visitors can participate in fitness under the guidance of a licensed fitness instructor.

The afternoon part of the program will be held from 17:00 to 19:00 at Marjan Forest Park where everyone is invited to gather at the north gate of Marjan before heading to Bene by walking, running, rowing, cycling, skateboarding, or any other active movement you can think of that does not involve a car or a motor. The first 200 visitors to arrive at the goal will be rewarded with commemorative t-shirts.

At the turnaround for the buses at Bene, there will be a central area, or what we like to call a “healthy hub”, for water distribution, snacks, blood pressure measurements, blood glucose measurements, blood group diagnosis, health counseling and plenty of educational materials.

The goal of these activities is to promote the reduction of cars, thereby giving priority to cycling, walking and public transport. All of these activities reduce the need to drive, thereby reducing pollution and creating conditions for the preservation of the environment and the prevention of sedentary lifestyle illnesses.

Like the many European and international cities that celebrate a day without a car, Split joins the global trend of reducing the use of cars through these public health activities at Bačvice and Marjan, all with a view of strengthening and raising the public’s awareness of health, quality of life and environmental benefits.

All interested citizens are invited to join this Friday to help highlight the dangers of excessive car use while encouraging the promotion of physical activity and healthy lifestyles as essential health determinants.

See you all on September 22nd at Bačvice and Marjan!
