More than a quarter of a million kuna was raised last week in various charity actions in Split!
We all have our moments of despairing about the state of the world but regardless of your beliefs, I think the holiday season and coming into the dawn of a new year, is always about taking stock of what has been, being with family and friends and of course, giving.
It is one time of the year where so many people tend to put personal struggle or issues aside, we forget ourselves, come together and decide it is time to give back. Just imagine if we all remembered this for the other 364 days of the year… but for now, let’s focus on the incredible good that has been done this festive season!
On Friday 8th December 2017, Gastro Get organised a charity dinner at O’Zlata restaurant; tickets were 150 kn which included dinner, wine (kindly donated by Plančić winery) and music. It was a beautiful evening and all money raised was donated to Maestral Children’s Home – a sum of 8,800 kuna.

Last Tuesday, 12th December, HULU (Croatian Association of Fine Artists) held a charity auction, 32 eminent Croatian artists donated works and on Tuesday night, their efforts raised an incredible 183, 900 kuna! That money is being used to help purchase much-needed equipment for the KBC Children’s hospital in Split.

On Saturday the 16th December, the 17th annual ‘A Di Si Ti?’ fair took place. An event organised by MOST which raises money (and awareness) for the homeless and at-risk of homelessness in Split and surrounding. This year, more than 61 organisations joined in 46 booths, with hundreds of volunteers and raised a record 73, 580 kuna!

In total more than a quarter million kuna was raised, a whopping 266,280 kuna raised between just these three events! When you consider what the average wage is in Croatia, this is an astounding figure and shows that the Christmas spirit is alive and well here in Split.
Before I finish, I just want to make a small note – these charity actions are beautiful and reinstate my faith in humanity again but let’s all take a moment to appreciate the unsung heroes – people who volunteer on a regular basis or dedicate their life’s work to the community and those in need, THANK YOU, for all you do.
Merry Christmas all, be good to one another!
