WARNING! Beware of Wild Boar: Unwanted, Four-Legged Guest Returns to Marjan

By 27 December 2017

If you're planning on frequenting Marjan today, you might want to hold tight.

Marjan Forest Park has become a real boon not just for humans, but also for game, and more specifically wild boars who have found that the park suits them well.

If you recall, the first traces of our furry, four-legged “friend” was discovered back in February 2017. What we learned then was that during the winter months, many animals move along the southern slopes, roaming fields on that side of Marjan Forest Park. Terrifying recreants in the night hours when the wild boars are usually active, the police and employees of the Public Management Facility Marjan had to intervene.

Early in autumn, and precisely sometime in October, a wild boar appeared again on the north side of the forest, next to a bush at ‘Prva Voda’ and along the road at Bene. Because these locations are no stranger to hoards of our fellow citizens, the City of Split organized meetings to coordinate the work of city services, the police, public institutions and hunters to combat the creature.

Unfortunately, the results have not proved to be positive.

To the disappointment of the City of Split, a reader of Slobodna Dalmacija encountered the wild animal on a walk at the park on December 26, 2017. While the reader remained unharmed, it is essential to know that such an encounter with this creature can be traumatic. We tip our hats to the reader who, in this high-intensity situation, remained calm enough to film the meeting as a warning to all fellow citizens of the city.

Expert advice states that if you do find yourself in a situation with a wild boar, apart from staying calm, maneuver your way out of the animal’s vision and quietly into the other direction.

While it's hard to see in the video below, here is the evidence sent in by the Slobodna Dalmacija reader.

While we can't ask you to stay away from the green lungs of our city, it may be best to keep your distance until there is a proper solution for this unwanted guest.
