"I don't know what the name Zadar means, but for me, it means wow" director of European Best Destinations stated.
At a celebration organised on the main square in Zadar on April 10, 2016, this Croatian city received its official plaque as the „European Destination of the Year“ given out by the Belgian portal „European Best Destinations“.
Celebrations were attended by the Zadar mayor Božidar Kalmeta, director of the Croatian National Tourist Board Ratimir Ivičić and deputy minister of tourism Rober Puletić as well as the director of European Best Destinations Maximilien Lejenue.
Mr. Lejenue stated that Zadar deservingly won this title because of its rich cultural, historical and natural heritage: „This win goes out to all the residents of Zadar because they are the best example of hospitality for all tourists and visitors“ Lejenue added.

"It's enough just to look through the window as you're descending towards the Zadar airport to know you're about to experience something unique and special. It's impossible not to succumb to the beauty of Zadar. I don't know the exact meaning of the name Zadar but for me and millions of visitors, it is synonymous with „wow“ Lejenue concluded.
Mayor Kalmeta also congratulated all Zadar residents on this win and thanked everyone who participated in the promotion of Zadar as the best European destination noting again that this recognition is not only important for Zadar but also for the entire country.
At noon, members of the Croatian Mountain Rescue Service descended down the tower on the City guard building to reveal the official „Zadar Best European Destination“ flag.
