TV France 5 Discovers Dalmatia: 5 Reasons to Visit Šibenik

By 18 November 2017

Popular French television channel showers the Dalmatian hotspot with praise

Reporters of TV France 5 visited Šibenik in October this year. Organised by the Croatian National Tourist Board, their stay in this increasingly popular destination in Dalmatia resulted in a feature titled ‘5 Reasons to Visit Šibenik’, broadcast on the national television in France.

Apart from being published on YouTube, the story of Šibenik was featured in their regular programme La Quotidienne that has daily ratings of 300.000 viewers on average, reported ŠibenikIN on November 17, 2017.

Introduced by the host as ‘an incarnation of a typical Croatian postcard’, Šibenik was presented as a city worth discovering, a classic Mediterranean destination easily reachable from France and located close to other gems such as Split and Dubrovnik.

Here are the five reasons listed by the travel reporter Ismaël Khelifa:

1) The cathedral of St. Jacob, the emblematic monumental edifice located in the Old Town that took 100 years to build. One of the best preserved and most impressive examples of Renaissance architecture in Croatia, the cathedral is also known as a UNESCO-protected cultural site.

2) Vineyards in Primošten, another UNESCO item located close to Šibenik, with thousands of vines growing from red soil – a terrain that used to be rocky and inaccessible, later transformed to fruitful land through manual labour without the use of machines. Nowadays, the vineyards are home to one of the most distinguished Croatian indigenous sorts, Babić.

3) Gingerbread cookies, traditional Croatian biscuits locally known as paprenjaci. The cookies aren’t indigenous to Šibenik nor the Dalmatian region, instead being equally enjoyed in all parts of the country. It’s somewhat unclear why the TV France 5 crew decided to feature this particular item in a Top 5 list on Šibenik, but who are we to judge – we really do love paprenjaci around here.

4) A boat ride to Ljuljevac island that houses one of Šibenik’s most prominent monuments, the St Nicholas Fortress.

5) National Park Krka, deservedly dubbed ‘the top reason to visit the Šibenik area’ by the French reporters. It comes as no surprise: the stunning scenery, unspoilt nature and an abundance of various sites and activities on offer in NP Krka really do make this gorgeous place a must-see – not only in Šibenik, but in the whole of Croatia. Even though the area is mostly known for its breathtaking waterfalls, the National Park presents many other sights to be discovered and it’s a perfect destination to visit even out of season.
