What do Croats Buy at Supermarkets?

By 15 May 2016

Majority of Croats shop at Konzum, Lidl and Kaufland.

Croats prefer to buy local products at the supermarkets and they usually stick to the products they are used to. Meanwhile, the quality of products is more important to local consumers than the price itself, the online research of the market research agency MSA Adria showed, reports Večernji List on May 15, 2016.

The research was conducted between 9 and 11 May and included 624 participants. The goal was to get a better picture of the shopping habits of Croatian consumers when it comes to the grocery store chains. The research showed that more than 60 percent of Croatian citizens shop at Konzum, Lidl and Kaufland. Almost 35 percent of Lidl shoppers and 22 percent of Kaufland customers are shopping at their favorite retail chain once to twice a month. In the meantime, Konzum customers are buying products in smaller quantities, while those that prefer to go to Lidl or Kaufland are doing so in larger quantities.

The research also showed that almost all the respondents were buying fruits and vegetables on regular basis, as well as milk products, non-alcoholic drinks, deli meats, sweets and salty snacks, and the washing and cleaning solutions. Approximately 70 percent of consumers buy raw meat at the supermarkets, while 50 percent get their fish and other seafood at the grocery store chains. About 60 percent buy organic, healthy food there.

Interestingly, many citizens, about 52 percent, buy toys at supermarkets, as well as cosmetics (53 percent), dishes and other kitchen tools (65 percent). About 55 percent of respondents prefer Croatian products, and for about the same number of the research participants the quality of the product is more important than its price. On the other hand, for 35 percent of consumers the price is a major factor when deciding whether to make a purchase.

Most of Croatian consumers remain loyal to products they are used to buying and are rarely changing their habits. This is true for about 60 percent of them. More than 50 percent of shoppers say that they make shopping lists and are going to the store with the specific plan, while about 30 percent of them confessed that they sometimes cannot restrain themselves when buying things at supermarkets, and they get items they were not planning to buy.
