Nord Stream II cound endanger Croatia's LNG project on the island of Krk.
Croatia’s Member of European Parliament Ivana Maletić and 65 of her colleagues from 21 EU countries have sent a letter to the European Commission and the European Council to stop the Nord Stream II pipeline project, reports tportal.hr on April 4, 2017.
The Nord Stream II project includes the construction of a pipeline with total capacity of 55 billion cubic metres of gas per year, to transport gas from Russia to Germany, under the Baltic Sea. Last year, Croatia and other countries from Central and Eastern Europe sent a protest letter to European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, demanding that the European Commission should assess whether the Nord Stream II project was in accordance with European energy legislation and strategic objectives.
The realization of the Nord Stream II project would endanger the implementation of the project of LNG terminal on the island of Krk in Croatia, which is strategically important investment project for the country.
MEP Maletić has repeatedly stated her opinion opposing the Nord Stream II project during debates in the European Parliament. “Nord Stream II does not diversify the sources of energy in Europe and does not reduce the dependence on energy imports, but it only diversifies supply chains from Russia, which is not the goal of the European Union. That is why my colleagues and I have sent the letter to the European Commission and the European Council to stop the Nord Stream II project. Energy dependence can very easily be converted into economic, social and economic dependence, and projects such as Nord Stream II turn Europe, which we want to be a leader and driver of development projects, to another direction,” said MEP Maletić, according to a statement from her office.
Among 195 key energy projects in Europe identified by the European Commission, five projects are from Croatia – such as the LNG terminal on the island of Krk and gas pipeline Zlobin - Bosiljevo - Sisak - Kozarac - Slobodnica.
“These are projects that contribute to the fulfilment of strategic objectives of the energy union and we need to realize them, while the Nord Stream II pipeline increases energy dependence and threatens the value and implementation of other energy projects which have already received funding,” she concluded.
