HiPP to Replace Inferior Products in Croatian Stores

By 25 September 2017

“We have managed to protect the most vulnerable group, young children, from inferior products that are less healthy.”

After tests proved that products sold in Croatia were below European standards, HiPP will relaunch one of its products, the Guardian reported on September 25, 2017.

After Ms Biljana Borzan, MEP, performed a study of the quality of seemingly identical products in markets of old and new EU Member States, it was found that HiPP baby food contained more vegetables, rice and Omega-3 fatty acid, fewer additives, and was less expensive in Germany.

A spokesperson for HiPP baby food said the ingredients of the product were clearly marked on the jars but added: “Due to the current public discussion about different recipes in European countries, we learned that this proceeding could lead to misinterpretations which we regret very much. In consequence, we assessed the recipe of HiPP Rice with Carrots and Turkey in terms of potential equalisations, and will relaunch it with an adapted recipe which is equal to the German one during the next few months,” adding that the different recipes are there because the market preferences local demands are different, which Ms Borzan judged “ridiculous,” because there is no way for babies to show their preference. “…And I am not sure any baby tested the food and said they wanted less omega-3,” she explained.

Ms Borzan said for Poslovni dnevnik that she expected other producers from the survey (Nutella, Ariel, Coca-Cola, Haribo, Danone) to follow HiPP’s example.
