Number of Cruise Ships in Croatian Ports Continues to Decline

By 9 October 2017

Dubrovnik is still the number one destination.

In August, there were 96 round trips of foreign cruise ships in the Croatian part of the Adriatic Sea, which was 22 percent less than in the same month last month, which was the sixth consecutive month of decline, according to data from the Central Bureau of Statistics, reports Index.hr on October 9, 2017.

The data also show that a total of 143,000 passengers arrived in Croatia on these ships in August, which was about 27,500 or 16 percent less than last year.

In the first eight months of this year, the number of round trips was 16.2 percent lower than in the same period last year. There were a total of 431 trips, 87 less than in 2016. These cruise ships brought to Croatia around 610,000 passengers, which was 14 percent or about 97,000 less than in the same period last year.

The cruise ships stayed for a shorter period of time in Croatia as well. They spent a total of 964 days in the country or 18 percent fewer days than last year. Most cruise ships sailed under the flags of the Bahamas, Malta and Italy.

The most substantial number of cruise ship visits in the first eight months of this year, as usual, was recorded by Dubrovnik, with a total of 355 trips, followed by Split with 138 visits, and Korčula with 91 trips. There were 77 cruise ship visits to Hvar, 70 to Zadar, 57 to Šibenik. At the bottom of the rankings, Vis, Šipan, Skradin, Senj, Pag, Cres and Bol had just a single visit in eight months.

Since the beginning of this year, the number of foreign cruise ships was higher than last year only in February (with just eight trips, which was one trip more than in February 2016), while in January the number of trips was the same as in January last year. In all other months, the number of cruise ship visits declined.

With the drop in the number of cruise ship trips of 22 percent in August, this month was one of the worst this year.
