Šibenik has been hailed as one of the ''poster children'' for the correct use of EU funds, it now seems that the coastal city is set to make yet more impressive moves with its even more impressive heritage...
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes on the 26th of December, 2017, Sibenik's popular Sveti Nikola (Saint Nicholas) fortress will soon be set to welcome even more visitors as works are in progress to secure the site and get it ready for 2018's tourist season.
"We've got an attraction that we'll have to valorise in a good way, and without exaggerating, it's a demanding task, but I believe that we'll achieve it successfully."
''In order for guests to visit the fortress, it's necessary to enable a terrestrial entrance, as you know, the fortress is under the special supervision of UNESCO and every piece of work has to be communicated with conservators and with UNESCO. We've been trying to find a terrestrial entrance for some time now,'' stated Šibenik-Knin County's Prefect, Goran Pauk.
''If there is no solution soon, we'll have to to create an alternative entrance from the land side as the main precondition for visiting the fortress. The access from the sea is the main entrance to the fortress, it's under reconstruction and that will be completed soon, and we'll strive to facilitate the fortress in terms of security for visitors. That means securing openings so that no one falls or gets injured, so the minimum safety section should be ready for the start of the season", stated Pauk for the loval Šibenik portal, Šibenik.in.
He pointed out that the fortress has already seen a more than promising 100,000 visitors annually, and has announced that one particular area will be converted into nothing less than a living room for fortress visitors. The ambitious and unique project is being developed through European Union funds and the signing of a contract worth approximately 26 million kuna is expected in 2018.
