Currently Unused State Assets to “Bring Billions”

By 18 May 2018

ZAGREB, May 18, 2018 - If the States Assets Ministry realises 10% of what is possible over the next three to four years, the impact on budgetary revenues will be counted in billions, Minister Goran Marić said in parliament on Thursday, presenting a bill on state assets management.

The bill is aimed at protecting and activating state assets and its implementation will impact employment and GDP growth, Marić said, adding that the potential of campsites was particularly promising.

He said the 100 square metre Uvala Slana campsite in Selce was rented out for four months for 2.2 million kuna. "If that price was applied to all campsites in Croatia, the revenue would be 330 million kuna and not 23 million as it is now," he said, adding that the price was arranged by the State Assets Ministry.

The bill was endorsed by both the ruling parties and the opposition, with several opposition MPs saying unused state assets should be given to local government.

Branko Bačić of the ruling HDZ said dormant state assets comprised 330 former army barracks, 3,470 plots of land, 3,860 business premises, 80 campsites, and thousands of flats and garages.
