Foreign Trade Deficit Continues to Grow

ZAGREB, July 9, 2018 - Croatia's exports reached 42.1 billion kuna in the first five months of 2018, up 1.2% from the same period in 2017, while imports rose by 4.7% to 70.6 billion kuna, according to initial figures published by the National Bureau of Statistics (DZS) on Monday.

The foreign trade deficit was 28.4 billion kuna, an increase of 2.6 billion kuna over the corresponding period last year, while coverage of imports by exports fell from 61.7% to 59.7%.

Exports to other EU countries increased by 7.6% to 29.1 billion kuna, while exports to non-EU countries declined by 10.6% to 13 billion kuna.

Imports from the EU rose by 5.2% to 55.68 billion kuna and imports from non-EU countries went up by 2.6% to 14.88 billion kuna.

Expressed in the euro, the value of exports to the EU was 3.9 billion euro, up 8% compared with the first five months of 2017, while the value of exports to non-EU markets was 1.74 billion euro, down 10.3%. The value of imports from the EU rose by 5.6% to 7.48 billion euro, and the value of imports from non-EU markets increased by 2.9% to 1.99 billion euro.

Viewed in the euro, Croatia's exports in the first five months of 2018 reached 5.65 billion euro, up 1.6% over the same period in 20167, while imports rose by 5% to 9.47 billion euro.

The foreign trade deficit was 3.8 billion euro, compared with 3.4 billion euro at the same time in 2017.
