WTA Bol Open Main Tournament Kicks Off - Two Croatian Players Hit the Court Today

Croatian tennis will be represented by five players, as Ani Mijačika was stopped in the final match of the qualifiers.

There is a tough task ahead for Croatian players in the first round of the WTA 125K Bol Open Tournament, which is starting on May 31, 2016, at the beautiful Bluesun Tennis Center. Ana Vrljić will play the second-seeded American Varvara Lepchenko, and youngster Tena Lukas will face one more US player, Sachia Vickery.

In yesterday’s qualification tournament, Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova, France’s Marine Partaud, and two Bulgarian players - Elitsa Kostova, and Isabella Shinikova - qualified for the main tournament. Marine Partaud won the final match against Croatian Ani Mijačika 6-4, 6-3, so it means that Croatia will have five representatives in the main draw.

We will inform you about the results of the Croatian players later in the afternoon, as their matches are scheduled not before 4 pm. The other Croatian players will hit the court tomorrow; Petra Martić facing seventh-seeded Slovenian Polona Hercog, top-ranked Croatian player in the draw Ana Konjuh will play American Grace Min, and Tereza Mrdeža will have the tough task against Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson.

“I don’t know Grace Min, I will have to take some time to study her game before the match”- fifth-seeded Ana Konjuh said after the first round draw. Ana arrived to Bol with high hopes of catching the last train for the Rio Olympics. The list will be closed next Monday and points from Bol are the last opportunity to make it through.

“The Olympic Games are very important to me, they are the dream of every player. If I qualify, I will be the youngest player in the Olympic tournament, so this is one big motivation. I hope to make it far in Bol and qualify for Rio.” – said Konjuh.

Once again, all the compliments to the organizers, as the town of Bol has come alive with this tournament, as we met some of the players last night, they had nothing but praise for both the organizers and the local people for their hospitality.
