WTA Bol Open: Unexpected Croatian match for the opening of the second day

Ani Mijačika stepped in as a lucky loser, but Tereza Mrdeža clinched the win.

The start of the second day of the tournament served us a surprising Croatian match. Swedish Rebecca Peterson withdrew citing a toothache so a “lucky loser” Ani Mijacika jumped in to face the fellow Croat Tereza Mrdeža. Mrdeža still managed to win the match 6-3, 6-4.

“Half an hour before the match I found out who I am playing against. I had no time to adequately prepare, but we know each other well. The fact that we are friends made it harder for me to play this match” – said Mrdeža who is the first Croatian to head into the second round.

-What are your plans for this season? – “I am coming back after a shoulder surgery, I have not played for six months, this is my third tournament…I want to stay healthy, get my game up to the level I know I can play on and the ranking will follow. My goal is, of course, to make it into top 100.”- said Mrdeža, currently ranked 297 in the world.

Ani Mijačika plays, then doesn’t play, plays a bit again…What will happen next?

“I don’t know. These few tournaments, like this one in Bol, I played because they were close. I don’t think I will play again. Will I stay on in tennis as a coach? I don’t know” – said Mijačika.
