It was a long and winding road, but European Coastal Airlines added two more destinations to their flight schedule this week - Lumbarda nad Rijeka
Friday, June 10, 2016, was a big day for European Coastal Airlines as they introduced their new flight to Lumbarda, Korcula and opened their brand new sea airport in Rijeka. Total Croatia News was on the maiden voyage to Rijeka and on the opening ceremony so we bring you a full report from the event that gathered many city and county officials, including the mayor of Rijeka Vojko Obersnel, deputy county prefect , director of Rijeka Tourist Board Petar Skarpa, director of Kvarner Tourist Board Ivana Perisic Zivadinov and representatives of the State and County Port Authority.
Mayor of Rijeka, Vojko Obersnel who cut the symbolic red ribbon with the CEO of European Coastal Airlines Klaus Dieter Martin stated:" Tonight, Rijeka opened an airport in the heart of the city which is an attraction not just for the tourists but also locals who will now be able to travel to nearby island destinations Mali Losinj, Rab or Novalja. It will add another dimension to our city and I would like to congratulate ECA on their drive and determination to connect Croatian islands with the mainland".
Klaus Dieter Martin, CEO of European Coastal Airlines, was excited to open yet another sea airport and added: “The road leading to this moment was long, it required years of negotiations and a lot of effort but we reached our goal. Even though tonight’s flight was a symbolic one, we will start our regular flights in the following weeks, as soon as inspections conclude all their scheduled tests. We will connect Rijeka to Rab, Mali Losinj, and Novalja as well as Split and Ancona (through Mali Losinj). We will enable all local residents to purchase tickets at a promotional price in the next few months. We are also planning to introduce flights to Venice and Trieste and believe this new service will attract both tourists and business people to Rijeka all year round”.
We wish them the best of luck and bring you a photo gallery of the flight and the opening ceremony along with a note that flights to Lumbarda (Korcula) are now also available.
