Well Deserved Recognition for the Zagorje Turkey

By 15 June 2016

The registration of the product protects it against misuse, imitation or allusions to its name.

The Zagorje Turkey is another Croatian product that has been issued a protection of geographical indications, the European Commission announced on Tuesday, reports Poslovni.hr on June 15, 2016.

"Zagorski Puran" is made by culling the cage-free indigenous breed turkey, 6-8 months old, from Hrvatsko Zagorje area. Its cleaned body is then being put on the market together with the neck and giblets; sometimes just a half of the body is used, fresh or frozen.

The items marked "Zagoski Puran" must come from the Hrvatsko Zagorje region, which encompasses the entire Krapina-Zagorje County, the Varaždin County area and the peripheral parts of the Zagreb County.

After it has been registered under a geographical indication, the product name gets protection equivalent to the intellectual property rights. It also becomes protected against misuse, imitation or allusions to its name. In addition to “Puran”, the geographical indication was issued for seven other products from four EU member states.

"Inclusion of the eight products from the five Union members in the register of the protected geographical indications and in the register of protected designations of origin shows the value of our system of geographical indications and emphasizes the great interest that this system has attracted", said Phil Hogan, European Union’s Commissioner for Agriculture, referring to all the newly registered products, including Croatia’s entry. Hogan added that it was always encouraging to see high-quality food products from Europe gettin the recognition they deserve.

“In all the product categories, including agricultural products, wines, flavoured wines and strong alcoholic beverages, the value of the sales of the items with a geographical indication amounted to 54.3 billion euros in 2010. This represents almost six percent of the Union’s agricultural and food sector and the beverage sector. A total of 15 percent of all the foods and drinks exported from the EU to third countries in 2010 were those with a geographical indication", Hogan pointed out.
