If you ever wanted to live in a castle, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
All those who dream of living in a castle and have some money to spare will soon get a chance to compete for the purchase of a magnificent building in Črešnjevo, in the Municipality of Beretinec in Varaždin County. The Šaulovec Castle, situated on a hill, will be available later this year at a public auction with a starting price of 4.4 million kuna, reports Večernji List on June 29, 2016.
“This is the amount which was determined by a court appointed expert. But, that does not mean that it will be sold at that price. Given the interest that already exists, the price could be twice as high”, said the trustee Stanko Makar, who is running the bankruptcy proceedings against the Varaždinka company which was owned by late entrepreneur Ivan Hudoletnjak.
In the 18th century, the Kiš family turned the original manor into a castle which was redecorated in 1902 according to plans made by a group of Viennese architects. Some of the castle still has Baroque vaults.
The last owner of the castle is a company owned by Hudoletnjak, a controversial businessman who lived there. He tried to transfer the ownership to himself, but since this is a protected cultural property it did not work out. Makar says that a public auction could be held in late fall or early winter.
Among those interested in the castle is the Municipality of Beretinec, which includes the village of Črešnjevo. Municipal Mayor Igor Kos already has some plans for the castle, Apparently, an investor is interested to transform the castle into a hotel, based on the principle of “cultural entrepreneurship”. “We could apply for money from EU funds. However, we still have not received a response from the Ministry, you know what the situation with the government is”, says Kos.
