Hajduk plays CSMS Iasi on July 14, 2016 in the second qualifying round of the Europa League. The kick-off for the game is scheduled for 20.00 CET, and we bring you the history of Hajduk’s clashes against Romanian clubs at the continental competitions.
In European competitions, Hajduk has played a total of 8 matches against Romanian teams, with a score of four wins, three defeats and one draw and goal difference 12:10.
Universitatea Craiova 1983/84
First Hajduk's match with Romanian club took place in the season 1983/84, namely on 14 September 1983, in the first round of the UEFA Cup when Hajduk played against Craiova University. In the first-leg match, the Romanian club won 1: 0.
In the return game, with 40,000 spectators at Poljud, Hajduk won the same result (1: 0, Zoran Vujovic) and after a 0:0 in the extra time, eliminated the Universitatea in penalty shootouts (3: 1). Hajduk goalkeeper Zoran Simovic saved two penalties.
We should point out that this European season was one of the most successful ones in the club's history because Hajduk reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup and they were eliminated by the English Tottenham Hotspur.
Steaua Bucharest 1994/95
Another clash with Romanian clubs took place in the Champions League in the season 1994/95, when in the group stage of the competition Hajduk played against former European champions Steaua. In the second round of the group stage, Hajduk won in Bucharest 1:0
The only goal was scored by Aljosa Asanovic.
In the second game, at Poljud stadium, Steaua was better and won 4:1.
However, despite the defeat, Hajduk had already reached the quarter-finals.
Dinamo Bucharest 2010/11
At the start of the competition in the European league, in the 2010/11 season, in the third qualifying round, Hajduk played against Romanian Dinamo Bucharest. In the first match in Bucharest Hajduk was defeated 3:1, and it is interesting that the first goal of the game was scored by the current player of Iasi CSMS Andrei Cristea.
In the return match at Poljud, Hajduk managed to catch up and win by 3:0 (Ante Vukusic, Mario Brkljaca, and Marin Tomasov).
Unirea Urziceni 2010/11
In the same season, in the next round (play-off), the draw decided that Hajduk will play against another Romanian team - Unirea Urziceni. The first game was played at Poljud and after their initial 0:1 lead, Unirea was defeated by 4:1. Senijad Ibricic scored two goals, Mario Brkljaca and Duje Cop scored one.
In the second leg, Hajduk conceded a goal in the 2nd minute but managed to resist until the end. Ante Vukusic scored in the 88th minute and thus Hajduk confirmed its entry into the Europa League group stage.
Today's game is the first official match for the team in the new season, so all that is left is to wish the team the best of luck and to hope they will not spoil the perfect record against Romanian clubs.
