Rovinj on Course to Break All-Time Record in Overnight Stays

By 17 August 2016

The population of one Croatia’s top tourist destination nearly quadrupled this past weekend when the 15,000 inhabitants counting, most beautiful town of the Istrian peninsula counted some 40,000 guest, glasistre.hr reported yesterday, August 16, 2016. According to the local tourist board director, rovinj counted 2.1 million overnight stays in 2016, which represents a 5% increase in overnight stays compared to the previous year. With these figures, Rovinj is on course to set a new all-time record in overnight stays this year.

Many other tourist destinations on the peninsula are also likely to break all-time records, especially those located in the hinterland, as the same newspaper reports today, August 17. They illustrate this with the example of one of the truffle capitals of the peninsula, the town of Buzet. In July Buzet has recorded an increase in overnight stays of almost 30%. Of course the numbers are much smaller than those in Rovinj, Poreč or Medulin, but show the potential central Istria.

The Istrian hinterland if often praised for its natural beauty, the gastronomy and its attractiveness for outdoor activities, yet the number of hotels, resorts and camps with significant capacity is – zero and guest mostly stay in small family-owned hotels, apartments and, increasingly, in detached villas with and without pools which are scattered throughout Istria.
