Reportage and Reporters Festival Fra Ma Fu in Virovitica

By 2 September 2016

Honouring a great journalist, reporter and writer Franjo Martin Fuis, this festival has become a unique Virovitica tourist event

Although often unfairly overlooked, reportage was and is the queen of journalism, a form that has grabbed readers’ attention to read an article in one breath, laughing or crying over the fate of the characters, Jutarnji List wrote on August 31, 2016.

In the next ten days Virovitica is becoming the central place, a kind of court of this journalism queen, home to the Festival of Reportage and Reporters Fra Ma Fu, honouring the renowned journalist, reporter and writer Franjo Martin Fuis. In its first year, it was nominated for the prestigious European tourism award F.E.S.T. Charter awarded by the European Federation of Tourism Journalists.

But the festival organised by the Virovitica branch of the Croatian Journalists’ Society (led by editor of Virovitica.net portal Goran Gazdek) is not meant only for reporters, but has turned into a unique tourism event. It all began on Thursday, with the exhibition of Croatian wartime reporter and experienced photojournalist Toni Hnojčik “This is What I Did in the War, Son,” where his photomonography was presented.

The same night Mato Pejić presented his “25 Years of Oktoberfest” through stories and photographs from this unique European beer manifestation. Friday began with the panel Youth in Journalism, where the moderator Sandra Pocrnić Mlakar will entice discussion on the conditions in which the young forces of the Fourth Estate is maturing.

The ceremonial academy on Franjo Martin Fuis, presentation of the book Ship Without a Compass and screening of the documentary movie Code: Seagull are just some of the events that will take place this evening in the Virovitica Town Library and Reading Room.

Saturday morning is reserved for a comic book fair, presentation of the work of local airplane club with attractive drones and the Agroexpo fair with exhibitions of agricultural products, while the afternoon will see Virovitica’s wine road taken over by local actors, presenting the rich gastronomy and enology history of the area.

Križnica is a cultivated scenery bordered by the Croatian-Hungarian border and river Drava, in Pitomača district. The Drava meanders on the small area, in large bends that are not found from Austria to the Danube delta. It is an isolated space, crossing the Drava with a barge or a 250 metre hanging bridge built in 1967. The old flow of the river is home to many fish species. Križnica is rich in endangered and protected bird species.
