Forbes contributor Ann Abel, who many of you may remember from her “8 Reasons to be Smitten with Split” love letter last month, has once again praised her love for Croatia. This time, Abel brings us “Why Dubrovnik Should be High on Your Travel Wish List”, published on September 12, 2016.
Ann Abel continues her love story with Croatia, exploring the depths of Dubrovnik in her latest Forbes piece - dedicated to making you choose Dubrovnik for your next vacation.
Abel opens by saying she initially believed that her trip to Croatia would be much like her trips to Italy - with similar rocky beaches along the Adriatic sea. Abel was immediately proved wrong, stating that “Croatia is a place unlike any other, proud of its long history and traditions, filled with grand palaces, walled cities and postcard-perfect coastal villages.”
While Abel claims she struggled with the language (which didn’t matter too much in the end as everyone spoke English), she suggests that the pearl of the Adriatic, Dubrovnik, is the “dreamiest old city in Croatia”.
After she boasts about our country’s rich history, proud people, and perfect filming locations for popular series “Game of Thrones”, Abel suggests that although Dubrovnik does get crowded, there are plenty of ways around the crowds (traveling in the winter, for instance, or by sitting in a cafe with a 180 degree view of the city).
If you’re planning on eating in Dubrovnik (which you will and you should), Abel urges you to venture deeper into the “vertical warren of streets”, where you’ll find simple eateries like LAJK and D’Vino, or fine dining experiences like the new Portrait.
For accommodation, Abel suggests you stay outside the city walls and away from the crowds - where she considers Hotel Excelsior and Villa Orsula as some of the best places to stay (although she does mention that she was a guest of Adriatic Luxury Hotels).
When you’ve seen all that the old town has to offer, make your way outside of the city and into the depths of the Pelješac wine region, where Abel boasts that Rizman and Saint Hills Wineries are not to be missed.
Lastly, if you decide to take Dubrovnik by sea, island hop through the Elaphiti islands and take advantage of the swimming coves, beach clubs, and “chilled-out” lunch spots such as the new BOWA restaurant on the island of Šipan, where Abel enjoyed freshly caught sea urchins.
