Marin Čilić beat Richard Gasquet 6-3, 6-2, 7-5 and won the decisive third point for the Croatian Davis Cup team
Croatia qualified for the finals of Davis Cup World Group on September 18. 2016 in Zadar. In the crucial match between best two players of competing teams, Croatian no. 1, Marin Čilić thrashed France’s Richard Gasquet in straight sets.
Marin was much better competitor from the very beginning of the play, and Gasquet was left without a chance throughout the match. Marin was delighted after the win: "When you look at the atmosphere, it’s an unbelievable feeling. It’s been a dream weekend for us; I played incredible tennis. I produced an excellent performance for all the crowd. I can’t be more proud than right now.”
In the finals, Croatia will face either Argentina at home or Great Britain away, and Marin is hoping for a chance to play the finals in Split or Zagreb: "We have always been playing well in Davis Cup. It’s something that’s in your heart. If we can play the final at home, it would be an amazing spectacle."
In the other semi-final match, played in Glasgow, Britain’s Dan Evans and Argentine Leo Mayer are playing for the spot in the finals.
This will be the second time Croatia will play in the finals of Davis Cup. In the previous final, Croatia won the Cup in Bratislava, beating Slovakia back in 2005.
