Young Croatian tennis player is unstoppable after the US Open

Best Croatian tennis player Ana Konjuh (54th in WTA) overpowered on Wednesday Georgian qualifier Sofia Shapatava (235th in WTA) with 6-1, 7-6 (2) and made it into the quarter finals of the WTA tournament in Chinese Gunagzhou, where she is the third seeded player, Jutarnji List reported on September 21, 2016.

Konjuh made three breaks to 27-year-old Shapatava in the first set and won it in 26 minutes. There was a lot more struggle in the second part of the duel, in which neither player managed to achieve a break, although there were chances. Shapatava threatened already in the first game (15-40), but Konjuh made her way out.

Croatian 18-year-old player found herself in an even tougher position two games later, when she was saving 0-40 and another advantage of the Georgian. After saving a total of six break points, Konjuh missed her chances in the fourth and sixth games. In both cases she had one break point.

In the end a tie-break decided the second set in which Shapatava took the lead 2-1, but those were also the last points she won in the match. Konjuh lined up six points and ended the match with her seventh ace.

In the quarter finals Ana will meet the better from the duel of Montenegrin Danka Kovinić (63rd in WTA) and American Jennifer Brady (123rd in WTA). Quarterfinals are set for Thursday.
