Dubrovnik Receives One of the Most Celebrated Artists of the 20th Century

By 29 September 2016

Francis Bacon, one of the foremost artists of modern and contemporary European paintings, will be shown for the first time ever in Dubrovnik.

A large exhibition of drawings in pastel, pencil, and collages will be presented to the Croatian public at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Dubrovnik, with the grand opening of this unique exhibition taking place on Thursday, December 22, 2016. Visitors to the exhibition will be able to see roughly one hundred works of art from this world-renowned artist.

As a prominent representative of the new figuration, Francis Bacon, who was born in Dublin in 1909 and later died in Madrid in 1992, is one of the most original artists of European paintings. Associated with the expressionist tradition, Bacon produced some of the most iconic images of wounded and traumatized humanity in post-war art, forging a distinctive style that made him one of the most widely recognized exponents of figurative art in the 1940s and 1950s.

The Dubrovnik Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art is a cultural institution founded with the intention that it should collect, study and exhibit artistic material of modern and contemporary art. The Dubrovnik Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art has managed to assemble, through gifts and purchases, a valuable collection of 3,000 artworks. The collection of modern art covers the period from the end of the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century, to the end of World War II, with most represented artists related in some way to the Dubrovnik region. The collection of contemporary art is covered since World War II. Along with sculptures, paintings and prints, there are also collections of photographs, video works and artistic installations.

The Francis Bacon exhibition is expected to stay open through January and February of 2017. More information can be found here.
