In less than a month, Split will become the global center for all things “olives”. From October 10 to 14, for the world's largest olive growing meeting, the VIII International Olive Symposium will be held at hotel Le Meridien Lav in Podstrana. The symposium will discuss the most important topics and latest discoveries about olives and olive oil production throughout the world.
The most famous scientists from institutes and universities around the world such as from Cordoba in Spain and the University of California - Davis, will come together as the greatest connoisseurs of olives for this 3 day conference. The symposium will be held under the auspices of the Croatian President Kolinda Grabar Kitarovic.
Director of the Split Institute for Adriatic Crops and Karst Reclamation Ph.D Slavko Perica emphasizes that, "This is a superb opportunity for olive promotion in Croatia - this collection is an opportunity like never before to raise the visibility of Croatian olive-growing in the world."
The Institute for Adriatic Crops and Karst Reclamation in Split is the main organizer of the event, and the main co-organizer is the International Society for Horticultural Science - ISHS, the world's leading independent organization of horticultural scientists for stimulation of research and education in all branches of horticultural science, which includes olives.
International Olive Council, known here as COI, is the global chief authority and the engine of all things olives, the main supporter and sponsor of the conference in Split.
Held every 4 years, the last olive symposium was held in Argentina in 2012. "It is a meeting that takes place relatively rarely, which gives it a very prestigious status. Therefore, scientists gladly exhibit their latest and most valuable results just at this meeting. The fact that our institute is able to organize such a scientific meeting is a great honor and recognition for our work, but also speaks of our affirmation of the international scientific community in our scientific field,” says Dr. Slavko Perica.
While the theme of the last congress held in Argentina was "Development and improvement of olives in the southern hemisphere", the theme of this event in Croatia is "Development and improvement of olive cultivation in the border areas".
"For the specific topic of our symposium in Croatia, we selected taking into account the conditions of our breeding areas of olives," said Perica.
So far, the symposium has received nearly 200 works of a total from some 600 authors from around the world, with most of them from Spain and Italy.
The researchers will present their latest achievements and new solutions in olive and olive oil production, where they will present and discuss for a full three days in Split.
