President of Croatian Journalists Association to Meet with Police Investigators

By 31 October 2016

Over the weekend, Saša Leković reported that someone had tampered with his car.

President of the Croatian Journalists' Association (HND) Sasa Leković said that in an interview with the police, which is investigating whether the bolts on a wheel of his car were sawed, he would talk about earlier threats as well, many of which he had not even officially reported, reports Novi List on October 31, 2016.

“In addition to the car accident, I will talk about earlier threats as well. There were at least a dozen direct and even more indirect threats”, said Leković.

Interior Ministry spokesman Bono Rajić said that police investigators would talk with Leković on Monday afternoon. “We will know more after that”, said Rajić, who did not want to speculate whether the incident would be investigated as a possible attempted murder or some other crime. Leković reported on Friday that someone half-sawed screws on the front right wheel of his car.

Croatian Journalists’ Association and many other non-governmental organizations called on Friday for an investigation into the alleged attempted murder. Also, due to the incident with Leković, as well as due to previous threats against journalists, several parliamentary groups requested that the Parliamentary Committee on the Media holds a special session devoted to safety of journalists.

The Interior Ministry announced that Interior Minister Vlaho Orepić personally contacted Leković over the weekend and would meet with him. On its website, the Ministry announced that the police had “launched a criminal investigation about the event which president of the Croatian Journalists' Association Saša Leković described in his Facebook post”, and that “the police, in accordance with the situation, will make an extra effort to protect Mr. Leković and all journalists who are being threatened and whose security is in question”.
