Croats Insulted by Amazon

By 19 January 2017

Amazon sells a doormat printed with Croatia’s flag.

The world’s largest internet store, Amazon, has among offered products a very unusual item which has angered CitizenGO, a community of citizens who want to protect basic human rights around the world, reports Jutarnji List on January 19, 2017.

At the Amazon online shop, you can purchase a doormat with printed Croatian flag, and CitizenGO believes that advertising and selling of such items represents an incitement to intolerance and hatred among peoples.

“National symbols such as flags and coats of arms on a doormat are insulting for the country of which they are a symbol and are a direct analogy in relation to the country and the people on which one wants to wipe their feet”, claim citizens who are offended by this item. They have decided to start a petition asking Amazon to stop advertising and selling the controversial doormat.

“A few days ago, on 15 January, Republic of Croatia marked the 25th anniversary of international recognition by then members of the European Union. It has won its freedom and independence thanks to the sacrifice of Croatian war veterans, many of whom gave their life for the homeland. They fought under the Croatian flag which Amazon now advertises and sells as a doormat”, said the citizens, concluding that the controversial item encourages intolerance and hatred towards Croats, as well as towards other states and nations whose flags Amazon also sells as doormats.
