First Drive-In Pharmacy Opens in Zagreb

By 17 February 2017

A new way to get your medicines.

In the Retkovac neighbourhood of Zagreb, Gradska Ljekarna (City Pharmacy) presented the first drive-in pharmacy in Zagreb. The drive-in pharmacy was opened in order to enable better access for senior citizens, disabled people, and parents with children, reports zagrebancija.com on February 17, 2017.

“This is an innovative way for us to provide pharmacy services to our fellow citizens. In late December, with the financial help of the city authorities, we have build an access driveway for vehicles, so that people with special needs, or for example mothers with children, can get their medicines without even leaving their cars”, said Nada Jambrek, the director of Gradska Ljekarna.

Vehicle access is provided to the pharmacy premises. People just need to ring the buzzer and a pharmacist will use a special window to hand over medication to the customer, without the need to ever leave the car. Gradska Ljekarna plans to open similar drive-in pharmacies in other parts of the city.

“We can announce that, by May, we will open drive-in pharmacies in the western, southern and northern parts of the city of Zagreb. We will do it in order to help those who cannot move easily, as well as the elderly and mothers with children. Also, when the weather is bad, people now do not have to leave their cars”, said Mayor of Zagreb Milan Bandić.

Next to the first drive-in pharmacy, there is also a smart bench where people can charge their mobile phones. Gradska Ljekarna has recently presented some other interesting projects, such as a bench for breastfeeding in the Podsused neighbourhood.

Ljekarna Zagreb was founded in 1966 by the Zagreb City Assembly. In 1997, it merged with Ljekarna Trešnjevka to form Gradska Ljekarna, the largest pharmacy chain in Zagreb. Today, Gradska Ljekarna has 38 individual pharmacies, as well as an analytical pharmaceutical laboratory.
