Not even bad news about Croatia’s largest privately-owned company could dampen the joyful mood of Deputy Prime Minister.
The largest privately-owned company is in deep trouble, with the possibility of provoking economic recession. Negotiations between banks, creditors, suppliers are government are taking place day and night, and tens of thousands of people are not sure whether they will lose their jobs.
However, all this does not seem to dampen the moon of Croatia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister Martina Dalić. During a recent press conference about the matter, she burst out laughing several times and stopped talking. She even had to ask government’s spokeswoman Sunčana Glavak to help her.
Realizing that her behaviour was certainly not going to improve her or government’s image, given the gloomy news she was talking about, Dalić asked “cameras”, meaning probably camerapersons, to delete her statement so that she could start again. However, given the fact that the press conference had a very important topic and that many cameras were present, at least one recording of her gaffe remained.
We can only guess as to the reason for Deputy Prime Minister’s “joyfulness”.
Martina Dalić was the Finance Minister from 2010 to 2011. Before that, she held a variety of posts in the Finance Ministry, including the deputy chief negotiator for Croatia’s accession to the European Union. She returned to government in October 2016, when she was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister in the government led by Prime Minister Andrej Plenković.
