Russian Millionaire Viktor Vekselberg Finally Gets Permission to Build Belvedere

By 9 August 2017

Big news for the Belvedere hotel…

The High Commercial Court has issued a final verdict which allows the start of the construction of the new Belvedere hotel on the site of the oldest, most luxurious hotel in the former Yugoslavia, reports Plava Kamenica on August 8, 2017.

Viktor Vekselberg, one of the most famous foreign investors in Croatian tourism, bought the Belvedere years ago for 12.2 million EUR. Former majority owner Zvonko Stojević, however, claimed that Vekselberg did not respect his property rights in the sales process.

After several years in the courts, a verdict was passed in Vekselberg's favor in early July, allowing one of the most spectacular investments in Croatian tourism to finally begin.

The Hotel Belvedere was opened in 1985 and immediately became the gathering place of the Yugoslavian sports and business elite.

Unfortunately, because of its strategic position on the protruding cliff across from Lokrum, the Belvedere turned into an important combat position of the Croatian armed forces during the war, which heavily damaged the property.

For the sake of complicated ownership relations, nothing had been done about the Belvedere for about twenty years, or until Viktor Vekselberg, one of the richest Russian tycoons who opened Gil's (today's 360) in Dubrovnik a decade ago, purchased the property.

The architectural plans for the new Belvedere look seriously impressive, The project has been signed by Studio 3LHD, which designed the newly opened One Suite Hotel in Srebrenica, the best Maistra hotels in Rovinj and a recently completed large hotel in China.

Belvedere’s team has recently been upgraded with the manager of the legendary Swiss hotel Dolder Grand, and many of the people referenced in the project claim that the new Belvedere will be the most lucrative hotel on the Croatian coast.
